Amit Lennon describes his approach to portrait photography as \u201calways\u00a0respectful and collaborative\u201d. Originally from Israel but now living in London, Lennon was holidaying in Greece in 2023 when he took this image of an\u00a0elderly couple.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d been for a swim in the sea, then ambled through the outskirts of Poros town, looking for a restaurant for dinner that evening,\u201d Lennon says. It was late afternoon when he happened upon the couple. He tried to strike up a conversation, but they only spoke Greek. As Lennon did not, \u201cthe\u00a0interaction became entirely nonverbal\u201d, he\u00a0says. \u201cI play-acted that I\u00a0wanted to take their photo and whether that would be OK. I\u2019m\u00a0not interested in taking a\u00a0photo without someone noticing. I\u00a0prefer to make a\u00a0connection, however fleeting,\u201d he\u00a0says.<\/p>\n
The pair nodded and\u00a0sat up more proudly in their chairs, looking towards Lennon\u2019s iPhone XR. \u201cIt felt like an eternal moment, as\u00a0if\u00a0this was their regular routine. I liked the moment of silent tranquillity, the beauty of the light and colours. It also echoed something that my own older relatives in Israel might do. I thanked them with hand gestures and went on my way.\u201d<\/p>\n
