CFL legend Doug Flutie sure sounds like a fan of Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris.<\/p>\n
Harris passed Flutie for 10th on the league\u2019s all-time passing list earlier this month, but the six-time Most Outstanding Player came on the SportsCage without any resentment and with his figurative pompoms on.<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep staying healthy and keep moving up the list,\u201d Flutie said in support of Harris as well as injured Hamilton Tiger-Cats\u2019 Bo Levi Mitchell, who moved ahead of him in August 2025.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love it. That\u2019s longevity. That\u2019s guys slinging it around, staying healthy, consistency. There\u2019s years where it feels easy and you\u2019re throwing for 300 (yards) a game, and then there\u2019s other years where you\u2019re nicked up and you\u2019re fighting it. These guys are veteran quarterbacks. They\u2019ve been through the mix.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then Flutie added a quick comment with a laugh and in good fun.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will say this: I only played eight years up there.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Flutie, Harris is part of a contingent of high-end pivots in the CFL. The 40-year-old Harris is one of a handful players of who\u2019ve increased the overall quality at the position.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe quarterback play is way up,\u201d Flutie said.<\/p>\n
The Canadian Football Hall of Famer also discussed about some of the rule changes coming to the CFL for next season.<\/p>\n
Host Barney Shynkaruk asked Flutie for his thoughts about the goalposts moving to the back of the end zone, the field length shrinking to 100 yards, and the depth of the end zone going to 15 yards.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think they\u2019re trying to Americanize the game a bit more to fit it into other stadiums to have the ability to expand the league a little bit,\u201d Flutie said. \u201cI do like the goalposts in the back because it is easy to get into field-goal range, especially at the end of a game and you\u2019ve got the ball with 40 seconds left and you\u2019re starting at your own 35.<\/p>\n
\u201cMake that a little tougher. It might eliminate the single a little more.\u201d<\/p>\n
Having lost ground on the all-time passing list to Harris this season and Mitchell a year ago, Flutie couldn\u2019t help think about how one of the rules could help his standing in another area.<\/p>\n
Flutie throwing 48 touchdowns during the 1994 campaign is the high-water mark for quarterbacks.<\/p>\n
