Richard Carapaz<\/a> will miss the World Cycling Championships in Montreal, Canada. The Ecuadorian rider from EF Education-EasyPost<\/a> fell ill after the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a, where he finished fourth. Carapaz will not recover in time to play a role at the World Championships.As is not uncommon in South America, Carapaz officially announced the news through his own channels<\/a>. \u201cI would like to use this message to let you know that, due to health complications, I will not be able to be part of the Ecuadorian delegation that will participate in the upcoming World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carapaz first shared the news with the national cycling federation, because he only wants to compete in the World Championships if he has a chance at the world title. It turns out that won\u2019t be possible. \u201cAs a top athlete, it has always been my desire to give my best and proudly represent the colors of Ecuador.\u201d<\/p>\n

“However, after a detailed evaluation, following strict medical advice, and in consultation with my performance team, it was decided that the most responsible course of action is to prioritize my health and focus on a speedy recovery to avoid greater risks to my career.”<\/p>\n

Carapaz Isn’t the First Big Name to Miss the World Championships<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear exactly what\u2019s wrong with Carapaz. After a summer that included the Tour de France (where he won the mountains classification and a stage) and the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a, his body is telling him to \u201cstop\u201d for a while. \u201cI thank the Federation for selecting me, my technical staff, and all the fans for their understanding and support at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, Carapaz isn’t the only big name to pull out of the World Championships<\/a>. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar won’t be competing for Slovenia after a crash in the Vuelta, and his UAE teammate Jay Vine had to withdraw due to illness on behalf of Australia.<\/p>\n

“I wish the entire ‘tricolor’ delegation that will represent us at this championship the very best of luck,” said Carapaz. “I will continue my treatment so I can get back to training as soon as possible.
