That collapse ended any shot at becoming the league’s first repeat champion since the 2017-18 Golden State Warriors, and it kicked off an offseason built almost entirely around managing money rather than adding talent.

Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams both saw their rookie-max extensions kick in this July, and that alone pushed Oklahoma City into the luxury tax for the first time since 2020. Rather than pay a bill that could have approached $210 million in taxes on top of payroll, general manager Sam Presti traded away Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe in separate deals for a bundle of second-round picks. The Thunder still enter the season as the betting market’s clear top pick to win it all, but the depth that carried them through three straight conference-best regular seasons is thinner than it has been in years.

Before locking in any number on this roster, it’s worth checking it against RG.org’s online sportsbooks hub, since the Thunder’s price as the betting favorite varies noticeably from app to app.

BET NBA FUTURES AT FANDUELOklahoma City Thunder Championship Odds

Oklahoma City sits at or near the top of the board on every major sportsbook, and the gap between books is worth shopping.

MarketOddsSportsbookImplied ProbabilityNBA Champion 2026-27+250BetRivers28.6%NBA Champion 2026-27+240FanDuel29.4%Western Conference Winner+140BetRivers41.7%Western Conference Winner+125FanDuel44.4%50+ Regular Season Wins-3000FanDuel96.8%

Odds current at the time of publishing and subject to change. Splitting a title bet across both markets and both books, rather than defaulting to a single app, is the simplest way to squeeze extra value out of a team this heavily favored. The 50+ win number at FanDuel, priced at -3000, tells its own story: the market considers a fourth straight 50-win season close to a foregone conclusion, so there’s little value left on that side unless you’re chasing 55+ or 60+ win totals instead.

What Oklahoma City Actually Gave Up This Summer

The math behind the offseason was simple: retaining every player on last season’s roster while paying Holmgren and Williams their new max salaries would have meant a payroll near $250 million and a tax bill nearly as large. Presti chose to protect the core rather than the depth, sending Dort, Wiggins and Joe out in separate trades for second-round draft compensation and staying under the second apron in the process.

That is a real loss. Dort was an All-Defense-caliber wing and a locker-room fixture; Wiggins and Joe were reliable three-point shooting off the bench. In their place, Oklahoma City is turning to Cason Wallace, who is extension-eligible off his rookie deal into October and now inherits a bigger role as a lead perimeter defender alongside Alex Caruso. Third-year guard Ajay Mitchell and rookie floor general Bennett Stirtz are expected to soak up a larger share of the bench scoring and playmaking that Dort and Joe used to provide.

On the plus side, the front office did keep center Isaiah Hartenstein on a new three-year, $75 million contract, replacing what had been a $28.5 million team option, and retained veteran forward Kenrich Williams, now the second-longest-tenured Thunder player behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Oklahoma City also added frontcourt size in the draft with Aday Mara and signed undrafted center Christoph Tilly to an Exhibit 10 deal, giving the organization more development runway at a position that will matter if Holmgren ever needs a breather.

SHOP NBA ODDS AT FANATICSMVP, Defensive Player and Sixth Man Odds

The Thunder’s stars remain priced at or near the top of every major award market, and one of the roster’s less heralded names stands out as a genuine value play.

MarketPlayerOddsSportsbookNBA MVPShai Gilgeous-Alexander+350BetRiversDefensive Player of the YearChet Holmgren+1200BetRiversSixth Man of the YearAjay Mitchell+600BetRiversMost Improved PlayerAjay Mitchell+3000BetRiversCoach of the YearMark Daigneault+2500BetRivers

Gilgeous-Alexander won the scoring title in 2024-25 and finished second in the league at 31.3 points per game last season, so his MVP price reflects a player who does not need to lead the league in scoring to be the most valuable player on the floor. When San Antonio game-planned to take the ball out of his hands in the conference finals, his scoring dipped to 27.6 points a game, but his assists climbed to a career-high 7.9 per game — a sign he can carry this roster multiple ways if the Thunder need him to.

Ajay Mitchell is the name worth tracking most closely among the award markets. As the favorite for Sixth Man of the Year at +600 and priced at +3000 for Most Improved Player, he is set up to absorb a meaningfully larger role now that Dort and Joe are gone, and both numbers could shrink fast if he opens the season hot off the bench.

The Path Back to the Finals

San Antonio is the obstacle that actually matters. The Spurs eliminated Oklahoma City in seven games last postseason and return a roster built around Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, two players still climbing toward their ceilings. Behind them, the Western Conference has gotten deeper rather than thinner — Denver kept its championship-core pairing of Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray intact, and Minnesota reworked its backcourt around a reported LaMelo Ball trade. On the other side of the bracket, Miami added a two-time MVP after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Toronto’s move for Kawhi Leonard gives the East a new contender to account for as well.

Oklahoma City’s own margin for error against the East has been extraordinary in recent years — a 29-1 record in the 2024-25 title season, the best interconference mark in NBA history, followed by a 23-7 mark last season that trailed only San Antonio’s 26-4 among Western Conference teams. Matching that kind of dominance again would help offset a tougher road within the West, but it is a lot to ask from a rotation that lost three established contributors over the summer.

Best Bets and Predicted FinishBest Bet: Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Champion at +250 at BetRivers, not +240 at FanDuel. Same outcome, a slightly better number — always check both books before placing a season-long outright ticket.Value angle: Ajay Mitchell for Sixth Man of the Year at +600 at BetRivers. He is the favorite for a reason — a bigger role behind a stacked starting lineup, in an offense that should still generate plenty of good looks.Line-shop angle: Western Conference Winner at +125 at FanDuel, not +140 at BetRivers. The reverse of the title market — FanDuel actually offers the better price here, so don’t assume one book is always cheaper across every OKC market.Fade: laying -3000 on 50+ regular season wins. The number is almost certainly accurate, but there is nothing left to gain from it. If you like Oklahoma City’s regular-season floor, a 55+ or 60+ win total is a more efficient way to express that view than risking $3,000 to win $100.Predicted finish: another No. 1 seed in the West is very much in play, but the margin over San Antonio should be thinner than it was a year ago. The Thunder’s ceiling still runs through health — particularly for Jalen Williams, who battled a recurring hamstring injury for much of last season — and through how quickly Wallace, Mitchell and Stirtz can replace what Dort, Wiggins and Joe used to provide off the bench.

Before placing a futures bet that won’t settle until next June, compare the full board of US sportsbooks, check the latest sportsbook promos, and if you’re following the Thunder from a state with legal mobile betting like Illinois, see what’s available for Illinois sports betting.
