BRISTOL, Tenn. \u2014 For much of Saturday night, it looked like Ryan Blaney, Ty Gibbs or Carson Hocevar would leave Bristol Motor Speedway with one of the most dramatic victories of the NASCAR Cup Series season.<\/p>\n
Instead, Joey Logano was exactly where a championship contender needed to be.<\/p>\n
Logano slipped through a frantic late-race battle among the leaders and drove away to win the Bass Pro Shops Night Race, collecting his third victory of the season and the 40th of his Cup Series career while reigniting his championship push.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur cars have been good and have been getting better,\u201d Logano said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a team that knows how to win championships.\u201d<\/p>\n
The victory was worth far more than a trophy.<\/p>\n
Three races ago, Logano opened NASCAR\u2019s new Chase format buried more than 70 points behind the championship leader. After consecutive strong performances and a victory under the lights at Bristol, he now trails points leader Kyle Larson by just 16 markers with seven races remaining.<\/p>\n
The turnaround has become one of the biggest stories of the postseason.<\/p>\n
Logano and crew chief Paul Wolfe gambled early, staying on track during the competition caution and collecting the Stage 1 victory. The strategy briefly buried the No. 22 deep in traffic, but Logano surged from 16th back to third by the end of Stage 2, proving he had one of the fastest cars in the field.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was very encouraging,\u201d Wolfe said. \u201cWhat really showed the strength of our car was Stage 2 when we were able to drive back through the field.\u201d<\/p>\n
The race\u2019s closing laps delivered classic Bristol theater.<\/p>\n
Blaney, who started 29th and led a race-high 202 laps, appeared to have the field covered despite a costly commitment-line mistake during a caution period. Ty Gibbs and Hocevar also emerged as contenders as cautions repeatedly reset the field.<\/p>\n
Then everything unraveled.<\/p>\n
With 42 laps remaining, Hocevar and Blaney were battling for the lead when contact sent Blaney spinning into the outside wall. The crash eliminated one of the race\u2019s dominant cars and triggered a confrontation after the checkered flag.<\/p>\n
Logano narrowly avoided the accident.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had already sent it way too deep in there,\u201d Logano said. \u201cYou just had to be patient and wait for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The final restart and ensuing battle among Gibbs, Hocevar and Larson opened the door again. As the leaders drifted up the racetrack fighting for position, Logano drove underneath them and seized control with seven laps remaining.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully they wash each other out,\u201d Logano said. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what happened. Just rolled underneath them.\u201d<\/p>\n
From there, the Team Penske driver never looked back, beating Larson by 1.248 seconds. Hocevar finished a career-best third at Bristol, followed by Christopher Bell and Gibbs.<\/p>\n
Larson\u2019s runner-up effort carried its own significance.<\/p>\n
Despite not having the winning car, Larson used strategy, stage points and a late call from crew chief Cliff Daniels to stay out on older tires and remain in contention. The result was enough to move him into the championship lead by a single point over Denny Hamlin.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe didn\u2019t have the best car tonight, but we still came home with a top-two finish,\u201d Larson said.<\/p>\n
The bigger picture may be even more compelling.<\/p>\n
Only 17 points separate Larson, Hamlin, Logano and Bell atop the standings, creating one of the tightest championship races in recent memory.<\/p>\n
For Logano, who admitted there was a point earlier this season when simply making the Chase seemed uncertain, Bristol represented another step in a remarkable comeback.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re closer than we\u2019ve been,\u201d Logano said. \u201cThe goal the whole time has been to win the championship. It hasn\u2019t been to finish fifth.
