The New England Patriots<\/a>\u2019 20-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> already represented an important response to a disappointing season opener. It also secured a special place in professional football history.<\/p>\n

New England earned the 600th overall victory in franchise history, including postseason games. The Patriots became the first of the eight original American Football League franchises to reach that total, according to the team\u2019s official game notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The historic win appropriately came through a performance that resembled many of New England\u2019s best victories. The Patriots played suffocating defense, controlled the running game and made life miserable for a legendary opposing quarterback.<\/p>\n

Aaron Rodgers completed 23 of 39 passes for 187 yards, threw an interception and failed to lead Pittsburgh into the end zone. New England recorded four sacks and held the Steelers to two conversions on 12 third-down attempts.<\/p>\n

Rodgers offered a blunt assessment afterward.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all played below our standard,\u201d Rodgers said in the Steelers\u2019 postgame transcript<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Patriots had plenty to do with that.<\/p>\n

Patriots defense delivers milestone victory<\/p>\n

Christian Barmore created the game\u2019s defining defensive play when he forced a Rodgers fumble. Elijah Ponder recovered the ball and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown, giving New England the separation its offense had struggled to create consistently. Rookie Gabe Jacas also intercepted Rodgers after the football bounced into the air. Christian Elliss led New England with 12 tackles and added one of the Patriots\u2019 four sacks.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh finished with only 235 total yards.<\/p>\n

The defensive dominance allowed New England to withstand another uneven performance from Drake Maye. The Patriots quarterback threw for 208 yards but did not produce a touchdown pass and was intercepted once. TreVeyon Henderson supplied New England\u2019s only offensive touchdown with a 39-yard run. Romeo Doubs caught three passes for 96 yards, including a 63-yard completion that demonstrated his ability to replace some of the explosiveness lost when A.J. Brown suffered a high ankle sprain.<\/p>\n

New England\u2019s history extends beyond Super Bowl era<\/p>\n

The Patriots\u2019 six Super Bowl championships transformed the franchise into one of the NFL\u2019s most recognizable brands. Reaching 600 victories reflects a history that stretches well beyond the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era.<\/p>\n

New England began playing as the Boston Patriots in 1960 as one of the AFL\u2019s founding members. The original eight also included the Buffalo Bills<\/a>, Denver Broncos<\/a>, Kansas City Chiefs<\/a>, Los Angeles Chargers<\/a>, Las Vegas Raiders<\/a>, New York Jets<\/a> and Tennessee Titans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Patriots reached the milestone first. Mike Vrabel\u2019s team did so by winning in a familiar manner.<\/p>\n

New England made an accomplished quarterback uncomfortable, forced turnovers and refused to allow one poor offensive play to become two. The Patriots improved to 1-1 after losing 13-10 to Seattle in their opener. Their offense remains a work in progress, but the defense provided a reminder of what made last season\u2019s Super Bowl run possible.<\/p>\n

Victory No. 600 was not merely ceremonial.<\/p>\n

It might have shown the Patriots their path to many more.<\/p>\n
