Some areas could experience wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph, with offshore waves reaching 15 to 18 feet.<\/p>\n The region will also see widespread rainfall<\/a>, although widespread flash flooding<\/a> is not currently forecast<\/a>.<\/p>\n However, pounding waves across multiple high-tide cycles could lead to coastal flooding and severe beach erosion.<\/p>\n North Carolina Department of Transportation crews work to clear sand from Highway 12 on Hatteras Island, North Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n (NC DOT \/ FOX Weather)<\/p>\n Ocean<\/a> overwash onto coastal roadways, including Highway 12, is expected, potentially creating scenes similar to major coastal events seen last year.<\/p>\n By Thursday and Friday, the surface low-pressure system will strengthen off the Southeast<\/a> and Mid-Atlantic coasts, causing onshore winds to intensify.<\/p>\n WHAT IS COASTAL EROSION AND WHY IS IT DANGEROUS?<\/a><\/p>\n Water will become trapped in back bays, creating consecutive high-tide cycles and preventing water from fully draining during low tide.<\/p>\n Eventually, elevated tidal flooding could spread across North Carolina<\/a>, Virginia<\/a>, Maryland<\/a>, Delaware<\/a> and New Jersey<\/a>, extending into southern New England.<\/p>\n WHAT IS A HEAT DOME AND HOW CAN IT AFFECT YOU?<\/a><\/p>\n The FOX Forecast Center said multiple days of continuous pounding waves will severely impact beaches. This could turn the storm into a major weather event, featuring 60 to 70 mph wind gusts, heavy rainfall, major storm surge and significant disruptions to Boston Harbor and the Massachusetts <\/a>coastline.<\/p>\n HOW HIGH PRESSURE AND LOW PRESSURE DRIVE THE WEATHER<\/a><\/p>\n On the other hand, if the low shifts closer to New Jersey<\/a> or Long Island, the strongest impacts could shift farther south, potentially putting New York City <\/a>on the fringe of the storm.<\/p>\n Finally, if the low remains offshore, coastal New England could still experience rough surf, elevated tides and breezy conditions, while the heaviest rain and strongest winds remain displaced to the south and east over open water.
