We don\u2019t have savings and we\u2019re not managing much in the way of investments and seeing that grow. The future looks murky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Julia, 36, just got back to work after her second maternity leave. She took 18 months the first time and 16 months this time. She says it was great to have time with her babies but also a big financial and career setback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cDuring the first mat leave, we bought a house and kept telling ourselves, \u2018It\u2019s not going to be this hard next time,\u2019\u201d says Julia, whose kids are one and four. But living expenses skyrocketed between 2022 and 2025, and the family was relying on their line of credit by the end of her second leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Her work top-up ended in November, 2025, and Employment Insurance ended in April, said Julia, who works for the provincial government. Unable to get a daycare spot so she could return to work sooner, Julia and her partner resorted to using their line of credit, which \u201cfelt awful to do.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Julia\u2019s partner works in hospitality and makes about $100,000 annually. She says he was supportive of her taking the leaves because \u201cwe\u2019ll never get this time back,\u201d and is confident they will recover financially over time \u2013 but Julia struggles with regular bouts of financial stress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cOnce a year, I have a giant freakout about finances,\u201d says Julia, who grew up middle class, but with parents who were often stressed about money. \u201cMy parents maybe talked about money too much growing up. I was very stressed about money and the lack of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/young-money\/article-quebec-city-paycheque-project-august-6\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paycheque project: Quebec City communication advisor, 28, wants children with partner but worries about home prices<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She deleted her social media accounts recently because the shiny, online versions of other people\u2019s lives were adding to her own feelings of inadequacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cHow are friends and family travelling or renovating their homes? Is everyone up to their eyeballs in debt?\u201d she would wonder. \u201cI was so in my head, seeing what people had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Julia and her partner bought their home after the birth of their first child. His grandmother gave them $200,000 for their down payment on the $710,000 house. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt felt like winning the lottery,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Now that Julia is back at work, she\u2019s planning to focus on paying down their line of credit and resuming transfers to her registered retirement savings plan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She\u2019ll also have to rebuild her career, saying taking a leave \u201cslows down any progress professionally. I kind of have to start over. My male counterparts are looking at manager and director jobs. That\u2019s a way off for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her typical monthly expenses<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Investment and savings: $1,188<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$800 to work pension. \u201cEmployer matches and I continued to pay into it while on parental leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$388 to RESP<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Servicing debt: $3,702<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$200 to line of credit<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$772 to car payment. \u201cOne year into a four-year lease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$2,522 to mortgage. \u201cJust renewed this year and were able to get better fixed rate than first three-year term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$208 to Canada Greener Homes Loan. \u201cFor heat pump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Household and transportation: $1,790<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$85 to property insurance<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$403 to property tax<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$370 to utilities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$40 to parking space<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$265 to gasoline<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$272 for car insurance. \u201cTwo vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$75 on car maintenance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$200 to cell phones. \u201cPartner just got a new phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$80 to internet<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Food and drink: $1,692<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$1,492 to groceries. \u201cThis shocked me after adding it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$30 to coffee shops<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$150 at restaurants<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$20 to alcohol<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Miscellaneous: $1,991<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$60 to union dues<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$50 to concerts. \u201cTwo concerts this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$22 to streaming services<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$40 to other apps. \u201cSpotify and Apple storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$150 to clothing<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$86 to daughter\u2019s dance classes<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$170 to YMCA memberships<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$60 to YMCA childcare. \u201cWhen we are in the gym.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$200 to pets. \u201cTwo cats and a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$736 to daycare and after-school care<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$75 on haircuts<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$25 on cosmetics. \u201cSkincare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$40 on getting eyebrows done<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$25 on supplements<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$100 on vacations. \u201cNo big trips planned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$50 on donations<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$30 on gifts<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$48 on life insurance<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$20 on credit card fees<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$4 on banking fees<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Some details may be changed to protect the privacy of the person profiled.
