The Revs maintained heavy offensive pressure for the remainder of the game, putting up 17 shots to Richmond’s 13, but failed to capitalize on key offensive opportunities.

Richmond’s freshman midfielder Christina Stamoulacatos got the scoring started for the Spiders at the 07:31 mark, shooting from just past midfield on the Revs side of the pitch. But her shot nicked a GW player, changing direction and sailing over the head of junior goalkeeper Marley Gerber and into the net. Gerber leapt as she retreated from the front of the goal area, but failed to get a limb on the ball.

But just three minutes later, the Revs evened the score after Michel sprinted down the left side of the pitch, challenging Spider defenders, and hooked a shot into the net, through the hands of Richmond’s goalkeeper.

“I think everyone was disappointed in conceding the goal,” Head Coach Jeremy Williams said. “But I thought it was a credit to the group, quick response and able to get it back, right.”

GW put together 10 shots throughout the remainder of the first half, six of which went wide or above the goal, while Richmond’s goalkeeper saved four.

Junior forward Kalia Kau, who is tied with Michel and junior defender Julia Bilal for the Revolutionaries’ leading scorer thus far this season with three goals, made a key defensive stop midway through the first half. After Richmond broke towards the net, Kau intercepted a likely assist and recovered possession for the Revs.

The Revs also couldn’t build momentum, despite two corner kick opportunities from sophomore Anna Cornejo in the first half.

Gerber anchored the Revs as the Spiders tried to create offensive opportunities, opening the second half with a diving save on a shot by Spider defender Morgane Zinn. A few minutes later, at the 57:21 mark, Gerber stopped another shot by Spider forward Emma Newman, crashing to the right front corner of the goal area.

Gerber was filling in for the Revs’ primary goalkeeper, sophomore Jasmine Black, who Williams said was dealing with an ankle sprain and was seen wearing an orthopedic boot at the match on Sunday. Williams said he hopes Black will return by Oct. 4, when the Revs are slated to play Duquesne.

“I think from Marley’s standpoint, coming in, we knew we wanted someone with experience, and I thought that experience showed throughout the day,” Williams said. “Look, I think she’s done such a good job, on and off the field with the team, being a leader.”

Gerber closed the second half with four saves while the Revs offense managed to take six shots, four fewer than Richmond, in the latter 45 minutes, but the flickers of offensive spark never materialized.

Williams said that despite the draw, he sees his squad executing on small aspects of the game that he thinks will determine their success as conference play progresses.

“So the differentiator sometimes comes down to those little things, and so for me, I think this group has done, since I’ve been here, probably the best job of that, which has been exciting,” Williams said.

Michel, the Revs’ lone goal scorer in Sunday’s match, said her team feels excited to head into conference play.

“We’re so excited to get into this, Michel said. “As obviously the freshman class, we haven’t played collegiately yet, like A-10, so we’re so hyped going into this, and we’re just hopeful to have a good season and bring all the energy.”

Looking ahead, the Revs will see a challenging conference slate, facing off against five of the top six teams predicted in the A-10 Preseason Poll that projected the Revs at the No. 13 spot, one spot from last.
