Visma | Lease a Bike fielded several talented riders in the Men\u2019s U23 Time Trial World Championships on Monday. The Dutch team had several potential medal contenders representing different countries, but in the end, none of them made it onto the podium. Ashlin Barry, an American of Canadian descent, finished fourth<\/a> in his first year of competition. <\/p>\n

Barry is the son of former Canadian professional cyclist Michael Barry, who retired in Montreal in 2012. The former cyclist, who rode for Lance Armstrong and US Postal for many years and later competed for Sky, had a son, Ashlin, with American Dede Demet-Barry (a former American professional cyclist and 2004 Olympic medalist).<\/p>\n

Because of his parents\u2019 cycling careers, Ashlin was born in Girona, Spain, in 2007. His father, Michael, rode for T-Mobile that year, before moving on to Team Columbia-HTC and later Sky. After his parents retired from professional cycling, the family moved back to Toronto, Canada.<\/p>\n

Because of his parents\u2019 nationality, Ashlin holds both American and Canadian citizenship, but in 2024 he chose to compete under the Stars and Stripes. This decision was primarily financial: the U.S. Cycling Federation has more resources and presented him with a plan to help him shine on the track at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Barry is one of Visma’s top talents<\/p>\n

Barry Jr. has been officially riding for the Visma | Lease a Bike development team since this year and is considered one of the team\u2019s top prospects. The 18-year-old rider finished second at last year\u2019s Junior World Time Trial Championships in Kigali and followed that performance this season with a fourth-place finish at his \u201chome World Championships\u201d in Canada.<\/p>\n

The American fell 22 seconds short of a medal<\/a>. \u201cIt was a good race for me, but as a freshman, I can definitely be satisfied with this result. Because of my father\u2019s passing in 2012 in Montreal, it\u2019s a special place for me anyway, but I\u2019ve also been back to watch the Montreal Grand Prix several times since then.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a few days, he\u2019ll have the chance to race on that course himself in the road race. \u201cI don\u2019t know if those long climbs suit me,\u201d said the 1.92-meter-tall American. \u201cI just have to ride my own race and try to make the most of it.
