<\/p>\nResidents in a Mississauga apartment building feel shaken after a fire, which police say may have been arson, sent at least 18 people to the hospital, including a firefighter and a police officer.<\/p>\n
Residents who spoke with CBC News said it’s the second time in two days a fire has started at 920 Inverhouse Apartments. Police confirmed there was another fire at the building the night before and said it’s possible the two are related.<\/p>\n
In his second-floor apartment, Oscar Maldonato said he was woken up early Monday by alarms, shouting and the smell of smoke. He said he was able to leave the building quickly and watched as fire crews climbed ladders to rescue residents sheltering on balconies of the floors above.<\/p>\n
“It felt straight out of a movie,” he said. “You don’t really expect that kind of thing.”<\/p>\n
The 911 call came in around 3 a.m. Monday, Ryan Baird, deputy chief of Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, said at a news conference on site. He said firefighters found the fire on the third floor of the building.<\/p>\n
Baird said the fire was extinguished quickly, but created heavy smoke that made it hard for residents to evacuate. About 16 people were rescued from the third and fourth-floor balconies, Baird said.<\/p>\n
At least 18 people were taken to the hospital Monday morning, Peel paramedics told CBC News. Two were in serious but non-life threatening condition, according to paramedics.<\/p>\n
Baird said a firefighter was among those transported, as was one police officer, according to acting Sgt. Amanda Steenson with Peel police. The Ontario fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate, Baird said.<\/p>\n

Many residents, including Maldonato, told CBC News a smaller fire happened the night before, also on the third floor, near one of the stairwells, but it was quickly put out by firefighters.<\/p>\n

Steenson said it’s part of the reason police think the fire is suspicious.<\/p>\n
“We are aware of the previous incident that took place at the same location and we are looking at the possibility that the two incidents are connected,” she told reporters, adding that it’s too early on in the investigation to tell for sure.<\/p>\n
Steenson said police will be checking CCTV footage in the building as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n
Maldonato said he was shocked by the incident. “I don’t even know who would do something like that,” he said.<\/p>\n
Olivia Scandlan, one of the residents who was transported for smoke inhalation, and Philip Drewniak evacuated their home together.<\/p>\n
Both told CBC News the smoke seemed to be coming from both stairwells, though police would not confirm if the fire was started in more than one location.<\/p>\n
“It was just black smoke for pretty much half the descent,” Drewniak said.<\/p>\n
“I had a lot of soot on my face,” Scandlan added<\/p>\n
The two moved into the building about a month ago and, other than the fires, Sandlan said living there has been great.<\/p>\n
“It’s a very shocking event, for sure,” she said. “But, I mean, the people here are all very kind.”<\/p>\n
Most residents, including Scandlan and Drewniak, were given permission to return to their homes, Steenson said Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
