Donald Trump<\/a> on Tuesday said he backed \u2060the idea of a ban on diesel exports, which some US politicians are calling for \u2060as a way \u2060to curb \u200bthe soaring cost of energy.<\/p>\n

Diesel prices have rallied in Europe<\/a> and the US to \u2060record highs as wars in Iran<\/a> and Ukraine<\/a> sharply cut exports<\/a> from some of the biggest producers \u2060such as Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. A gallon of diesel fuel in the US was $6.53 on Tuesday, the highest average on record and over 75% higher than a year ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve \u200bsaid let\u2019s not send \u200cout the diesel. \u200cWe make a lot of diesel \u2026 I\u2019ve called for it. \u200cI\u2019ve called for it within my people,\u201d Trump told reporters ahead of a meeting with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n

The US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, speaking at the same meeting, said: \u201cWe\u2019re examining whether it\u2019s feasible in terms of the overall refining capacity and whether a full or partial ban would work.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Trump urged Zelenskyy to pause strikes on Russian oil refineries over concerns that they could further push up prices, the Financial Times reported<\/a>. On social media, Trump wrote that Russia \u201cunfortunately lost control of its Diesel Oil Industry\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some Republican Senate candidates in the most \u200bcompetitive midterm races called for the administration to implement the export ban to try to alleviate high costs for Americans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIowans are being squeezed and shouldn\u2019t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran,\u201d wrote the US representative Ashley Hinson, a Republican who is in a competitive Senate race in Iowa, on X<\/a>. \u201cWe need to use every option at our disposal to provide some relief from high prices.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers trade group said<\/a> that an export ban would \u201cbackfire\u201d, noting that domestic refiners would have to reduce production and \u201cproducing less diesel also means producing less gasoline\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump said he and Zelenskiy would \u2060discuss Ukrainian attacks on refining sites in Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is \u200ba serious \u200bhit on the Russians. \u200bIt\u2019s also a serious hit on the price \u200bof diesel,\u201d said \u200cTrump, who \u200balso told \u200breporters the two leaders would discuss working out a solution to end Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s going to happen,\u201d Trump said, of a potential solution to the war.<\/p>\n
