Somehow, Ty Gibbs has now landed in the middle of the post-fight penalty debate.

And it all comes down to a water bottle.

As Blaney and Hocevar’s confrontation erupted on pit road following Friday night’s race at Bristol, cameras captured Gibbs tossing a water bottle toward the growing crowd surrounding the two drivers. It was a blink-and-you-might-miss-it moment amid the chaos, but additional angles quickly began circulating on social media.

Now, days after one of NASCAR’s wildest postrace scenes of the season, a debate has emerged over whether Gibbs should face discipline for throwing an object into a crowded area.

Ty Gibbs throwing a water bottle in the middle of the fight is the funniest part

Ty Gibbs’ Water Bottle Toss Sparks NASCAR Penalty Debate

The fight itself stemmed from late contact between Hocevar and Blaney. Blaney confronted Hocevar on pit road afterward, and the situation escalated almost immediately.

Hocevar landed two punches as crew members, officials and others rushed toward the drivers. Gibbs was nearby, and video from the scene showed the Joe Gibbs Racing driver throwing a water bottle in the direction of the scrum.

The strange cameo quickly became a talking point of its own.

NASCAR journalist Eddie Kalegi argued on the “Motorsports Today” podcast that Gibbs should be held accountable for throwing an object toward a crowd of people.

“It’s a funny video, but you cannot have your drivers throwing objects recklessly into a crowd when everybody is paying attention to the fight, and nobody has any sort of self-defense,” Kalegi said.

That is where the argument gets more complicated.

There have been social media claims about the bottle striking a media member and reports surrounding a damaged phone. Without definitive confirmation of exactly what the bottle struck, however, those claims should not be treated as established fact.

What the available video does show is Gibbs throwing the bottle toward an area packed with people as the Blaney-Hocevar altercation unfolded.

Whether that rises to the level of something NASCAR should punish is another question entirely.

Should NASCAR Punish Ty Gibbs?

There is another piece of context worth remembering: Gibbs had already been involved in his own tense moment with Hocevar before the postrace fight.

As the field headed toward pit road, Hocevar and Gibbs had an exchange following Joey Logano’s victory. Gibbs ultimately finished fifth, while Hocevar finished third. Blaney’s night unraveled after his late contact with Hocevar, setting the stage for what happened moments later.

That context may explain why Gibbs was paying such close attention when Blaney approached Hocevar, but it does not necessarily settle the debate over the bottle.

There is also a major difference between saying Gibbs’ decision was ill-advised and saying NASCAR should fine him for it.

Blaney and Hocevar were at the center of the physical confrontation. Gibbs never joined the fight or threw a punch. His involvement amounted to a brief toss from outside the scrum, albeit one directed toward a crowded scene.

That distinction is why the penalty debate has become interesting.

NASCAR has to decide where the line falls between a bizarre heat-of-the-moment act and conduct worthy of formal discipline. Punishing Gibbs would send a clear message that throwing anything toward a crowd during an altercation crosses that line. Leaving it alone would treat the bottle toss as a minor sideshow to the much larger confrontation unfolding in front of him.

Either way, Gibbs managed to become one of the most talked-about people from a fight he wasn’t actually in.

Maggie MacKenzie Maggie MacKenzie covers NASCAR for Heavy.com.
