After benefitting from shady refereeing decisions throughout throughout their history, Jos\u00e9 Mourinho had the temerity to imply foul play a heated edition of the Madrid derby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cThe referee had no experience to officiate a derby,\u201d said the whiner-in-chief (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marca.com\/futbol\/laliga-ea-sports\/atletico-r-madrid\/2026\/09\/20\/01_0101_20260920_175_186-directo.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marca<\/a>). \u201cHe\u2019s 41 years old. He\u2019s a poor referee who\u2019s only ever done minor matches. Congratulations to the refereeing committee for this appointment, but Mr. Trujillo [the VAR official] does have a history with Real Madrid. In the Cup, in Girona, Osasuna. He\u2019s a VAR official with a lot of history. There\u2019s no pressure in Las Rozas. Or is there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cIf they let us compete on equal terms, we will. I don\u2019t want to say this was rigged; I want to believe they\u2019re wrong. The club itself announced that no players would give interviews in the mixed zone, and allowed Real Madrid TV to air a statement vilifying the state of refereeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Now anyone with a passing familiarity with football will know that this is pure hypocrisy. Few clubs have benefitted from shady refereeing like Real Madrid have. FC Bayern fans know this better than anyone, after so many robberies in the UEFA Champions League.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Now Atl\u00e9tico, it seems, have had enough. The club issued a statement which really gets to the heart of the matter (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marca.com\/futbol\/atletico\/2026\/09\/21\/atletico-da-credito-hay-lineas-rojas-traspasar-han-vuelto.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marca<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cWe were thinking of printing up pictures of all the refereeing mistakes that Real Madrid have benefited from but we would run out of forests. It can\u2019t be done for environmental purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cThey want to play the derby return leg now,\u201d the club told Marca. \u201cWith intimidated referees and mistakes in their favor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">\u201cThere are red lines that cannot be crossed, and they\u2019ve done it again. You can\u2019t be disrespectful. The integrity of Spanish football is in danger. Either we stop them now or there will be no turning back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Will Madrid face any consequences for their behavior? Unlikely. Their tendrils run deep, whether it\u2019s in La Liga or Europe. However it is cathartic to see a large club publicly call them out. In the meantime, Madrid demonstrate that when treated like everyone else, they lack class and spit in the face of sportsmanship.
