Eye test. (Mitchell Ringos, CityNews)<\/p>\nThe future of specialized eye and neurological testing in Manitoba could be getting a whole lot clearer.<\/p>\n
One device that is being developed in Winnipeg will\u00a0bring testing closer to patients here, and soon across the country.<\/p>\n
The idea started in 2019, when neurologist Dr. Neda Anssari travelled north of Toronto to help test children who did not have regular access to eye specialists.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had to take two big trucks with heavy, big equipment all the way there to test these kids,\u201d said Dr. Anssari.<\/p>\n

That led Anssari and neuro-ophthalmologist Dr. Behzad Mansouri to develop EyeMirage, a portable system that can test several aspects of vision and eye movement, and also concussion screening.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat if the device is with the patients and the results can be sent to the doctor sitting in a major city, and these kids can have more regular testing than a technician going there once and awhile?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
Before receiving its Health Canada licence, the technology was tested across four Winnipeg optometry centres. Its developers say it could eventually be used in emergency rooms, ambulances, sporting events and remote communities where specialists may not be readily available.<\/p>\n
\u201cA technician or a nurse who is working in the community, they can actually train on using the EyeMirage, and they can start servicing the people in the area,\u201d said Dr. Behzad Mansouri, a co-founder of Neuroptek.<\/p>\n
The company is now preparing for a Canadian launch in 2027, with talks already underway with the Nunavut government.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are not looking just for servicing people in Canada. We are very proud of that, but we want to hopefully one day anybody in the world, they can use this technology to get better faster,\u201d said Mansouri.<\/p>\n
