{"id":907887,"date":"2026-09-24T13:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T13:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/907887\/"},"modified":"2026-09-24T13:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T13:22:14","slug":"not-everyone-thinks-ai-will-kill-us-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/907887\/","title":{"rendered":"Not everyone thinks AI will kill us all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9hisv003828oz1e3mej27@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When AI company Hugging Face was hacked by a swarm of rogue OpenAI agents who had escaped their testing environment, the company\u2019s CEO had many things to say.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueov10p00063b6qzcf3amaj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He called it an unprecedented event \u2013 \u201cday one for cybersecurity in the age of agents.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueouek900023b6q0c8gtvys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But here\u2019s one thing he didn\u2019t say: The hack is a sign AI is going to be able to eventually wipe out humanity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueow4jn00003b6q4fg3ljc5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clement Delangue doesn\u2019t buy into the doomer hype that\u2019s gone viral in recent weeks, even as the victim of likely the most sophisticated AI agent-powered attack (that we know of). He scoffed at former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, when he posted on X that the people building AI are \u201cgambling with our lives\u201d because they believe it \u201cwill kill us all.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueowx4f00083b6qcs8vhdm1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAsking (Coxon) about AI extinction risk is like asking your AC guy about climate change,\u201d Delangue posted on X. \u201cNot saying it\u2019s necessarily uninteresting or wrong per se but let\u2019s keep things in perspective and hear from the full range of expertise across the ecosystem!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueowxjn00093b6qy3fo2j94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s easy to get the impression that everyone in AI is worried about it causing human extinction. But that\u2019s not the case. There are plenty of scientists, industry researchers, and executives who believe the risks are overblown, and the technology is the way toward a new golden age.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2151605675.jpg\" alt=\"Clem Delangue, co-founder and CEO of Hugging Face, at a tech summit in San Francisco on May 9, 2024.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1331\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueozejn000z3b6qqquedo7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yes, there are major safety concerns surrounding AI, these anti-doomer AI scientists and other industry veterans say. But they maintain that AI is not going to wipe out humanity in the next few years, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/17\/tech\/how-will-ai-exterminate-humanity-cec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some have predicted<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueozqoc00143b6qf21c1bhx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Each has their own reasoning \u2013 some say any action AI would take that could wipe out humanity would need heavy involvement from human accomplices. Then there\u2019s those who say AI at the end of the day is a computer program that can be engineered, and others who say that engineers are getting better and better at keeping AI from going rogue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmueozr2p00153b6q304gyzqj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still others worry that by raising alarms about a hypothetical extinction risk, some may be seeking to direct policymaking in a way that could benefit some companies over others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iteq000a3b6qwyy13kwk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the loudest voices has been Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose company not only dominates the AI chips industry, but also has stakes in many other major AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic. He told CBS News on Sunday that there is a \u201c0% chance\u201d AI will cause the end of humanity by 2030.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9ll2h001h3b6q2apo9v9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cScaring people is unnecessary. It is irresponsible,\u201d Huang added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iteq000b3b6q6ehwhvbx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Huang has pushed back against the so-called \u201cdoomers\u201d for years. He did not sign a 2023 Center for AI Safety one-sentence statement that stated: \u201cMitigating the risk of extinction from A.I. should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war.\u201d (The CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind all signed the statement).\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2266460326-20260922212758996.jpg\" alt=\"Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang speaks during a keynote address at Nvidia's GTC Conference on March 16, 2026 in San Jose, California.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9lsdm001j3b6qe9pqap5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2023, he told the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/https:\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2023\/12\/04\/how-jensen-huangs-nvidia-is-powering-the-ai-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New Yorker<\/a> he has never worried about AI technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iteq000c3b6q2dp2dl5a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His comments have only grown more forceful since then. In July, he told Axios that the idea that AI is going to be the end of humanity as \u201ccomplete nonsense.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iteq000d3b6qy0r486m6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Huang also rejected calls from other AI leaders for greater AI regulation, saying it\u2019s up to the companies to pace themselves. Recent incidents of AI agents going rogue, taking unsanctioned actions and hacking into other companies is just an issue of a product not being ready to be released, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iteq000e3b6qju9qu020@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat\u2019s engineering, good old-fashioned engineering,\u201d he told reporters at an AI summit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/17\/tech\/king-charles-ai-summit-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hosted by Britain\u2019s King Charles III<\/a> last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9mt4r001n3b6qk13c19nq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is no different than, you know, an omelet\u2019s not ready to be released, or a car is not ready to be released, an airplane engine\u2019s not ready to be released. You should properly test it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iteq000g3b6qy2m57mpl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then there\u2019s Turing Award-winning computer scientist Yann LeCun, considered by many in the industry to be one of the \u201cgodfathers of AI\u201d and the former chief AI scientist at Meta. LeCun responded bluntly to a user who claimed AI \u201cwill get us all killed in three years\u201d:\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-1691377883.jpg\" alt=\"Yann LeCun, then vice president and chief AI scientist for Meta Platforms, testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee at the Hart Senate Office Building on September 19, 2023.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1320\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9mxfp001p3b6qguxkm9yr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNo, Not a chance in hell,\u201d he said. \u201cAI folks who live in the discrete world of bits and tokens don\u2019t always understand how incredibly messy the real world is,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuefpn2v003c3b6qok2nst58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            LeCun has compared the panicked responses to recent AI incidents to blaming the entire plumbing industry for one bad plumber\u2019s mistake, LeCun said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000k3b6qya6dc3un@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not everyone dismisses the risk quite so bluntly, though. Aidan Gomez, CEO of Cohere, a leader in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/06\/tech\/open-closed-ai-models\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">open-weight AI model<\/a> space, told CNN in a recent interview that the \u201cdoomer\u201d talk is \u201cmisleading and scary.\u201d Gomez lamented that the public may be getting \u201cthis skewed perspective\u201d that the entire industry says AI poses an immediate existential risk to humans, \u201cwhich is fundamentally not true,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000l3b6q2otaetx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Where Huang and LeCun wave the extinction scenario away almost entirely, Gomez draws a more specific line: He says there are real risks, just not the ones getting the most attention right now. The \u201cmost significant national security threat\u201d posed by AI is cyberattacks, Gomez said, especially if such powerful tools fall into the wrong hands, or are being utilized by nation states for offensive operations.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2295058329.jpg\" alt=\"Aidan Gomez, CEO and co-founder of Cohere, speaks at the Palais des Congres in Montreal on September 16, 2026. All In is Canada's largest artificial intelligence and technology event.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000m3b6q6kraku0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, \u201cyou just need a data center, and overnight you have like a country\u2019s population of the world\u2019s best hackers at your disposal.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000n3b6qo6gb5dz6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As for misalignment \u2014 the fear that AI agents could go rogue on their own \u2014 Gomez said that\u2019s \u201ca concern,\u201d but one he considers far more manageable than the cyber threat. He said the industry is \u201cgetting quite good at measuring it, getting quite good at detecting it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000o3b6q122b2m4h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rumman Chowdhury, US science envoy for AI under former President Joe Biden, takes the skepticism a step further, questioning not just the odds of an AI-driven extinction event but the mechanics of how one would even happen. While AI could be used to help kill humans, she argues, it would need human involvement to set it off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000p3b6qeg8d5xa4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd then what? It uses the machines to actually make a physical virus, and then it, what, calls FedEx?\u201d Chowdhury, now CEO of the safety firm Human Intelligence PBC, told CNN in an interview, referring to the often-referenced warning of AI creating a killer virus.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2153526543.jpg\" alt=\"AI ethics expert Rumman Chowdhury at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology in Seoul on May 22, 2024.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9omff001v3b6q4556xnnu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLike, what is this mechanism?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000q3b6q1y27tmu0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chowdhury said she believes that researchers like Coxon are being honest that they think AI poses an existential risk. \u201cBut are his beliefs reality? No, his beliefs are not,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000r3b6qz6qa9f2p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Chowdhury, the sincerity of that belief is almost beside the point. What worries her is that such existential fears could distract from present harms the technology is already causing, such as AI deepfakes, mental health challenges and the potential for job loss.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9iter000s3b6qai8kjnf4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then there\u2019s the loudest voice dismissing these concerns, which is also one of the most powerful: President Donald Trump, who has thus far defied calls for the US government to get more involved in setting standards or regulating the industry and called the recent alarm over AI \u201ca hoax.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuegu5rd005c3b6q189tjuf4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe only control or \u2018guardrails\u2019 that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!)
