Griffin \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>The Hall of Fame driver competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1972 to 2000, an era in which races involved more contact between cars and lacked today\u2019s safety protections. He won the Cup Series in 1981, 1982 and 1985 and totaled 84 Cup Series victories \u2014 tied for fourth all-time. <\/p>\n<p>The statement emphasized that while Waltrip is diagnosed with a serious brain disease, symptoms so far are mild and he is enjoying time with loved ones. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to share a health update with all of Darrell\u2019s friends and fans who have supported him throughout his racing career,\u201d the statement said. \u201cWhile this disease will inevitably progress, thankfully it is currently limited to some minor noticeable symptoms. As a result, he will be stepping further away from the public limelight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe assured, Darrell is happy and otherwise healthy, spending time with his wife, Stevie, two daughters and three young grandchildren,\u201d the family shared. \u201cWe are grateful for your continued prayer, love and support.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The statement ended with the catchphrase Waltrip screamed hundreds of times from the broadcast booth just before the green flag started races: \u201cBoogity! Boogity! Boogity!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waltrip\u2019s reputation for making outrageous statements and loudly celebrating victories earned him the nickname \u201cJaws.\u201d And win he did. He continued calling races through 2019 and told the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/nascar-auto-racing\/article288523985.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Charlotte Observer<\/a> in 2023 that he missed the microphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a great driving career. I had a great TV career,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I quit TV probably a little too soon. I could\u2019ve hung around a little bit longer.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>FTD is a set of progressive brain disorders that gradually damage the frontal and temporal lobes, according to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.gov\/alzheimers-dementias\/frontotemporal-dementia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alzheimers.gov<\/a>. Symptoms include acting socially inappropriately, losing empathy and judgment, and struggling to name objects and understand written and spoken words.<\/p>\n<p>CTE is a separate progressive degenerative brain disease found in people with\u202fa history of repetitive head impacts often incurred during contact sport play, according to the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/about\/frequently-asked-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Boston University CTE Research Center<\/a>.
