In 2027, tranquil interiors aren’t about completely pared back style. They involve more texture, depth, and cocooning colors in a trend experts have deemed ‘warm minimalism.’ As opposed to classic minimalism, this iteration prioritizes coziness for tranquil yet inviting interiors.

Years before it was a trend, Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo were already championing the warm minimalist look. A peek into their Pacific Palisades estate reveals a living room swathed in shades of chocolate brown and gray. The space, created by award-winning LA-based studio Clements Design, is full of moody character. From the limewashed walls to the layered cushions on the chocolate-brown sofa (I love these hand-loomed throw pillows from Saks Fifth Avenue for a similar look), it’s a warm, minimalist haven.

Whether you’re already tapped into the interior design trend or are just learning about it, Adam and Behati’s space is a masterclass in nailing the style.

It is both restrained and cushioned. ‘Warm minimalism is characterised by neutral palettes, soft textures, and simple yet intentional décor to create a cohesive and calming atmosphere,’ explains Amanda Smith Corston, interior stylist at Ted Todd.

So, how can you create a timeless warm minimalist look in your own home? It’s a careful curation of color, texture, and materiality.

Amanda advises: ‘To incorporate this trending look, I would first start by selecting a neutral color palette, featuring soft beiges, warm grays and earthy tones to adopt warmth. All while focusing on organic materials like linens, rattan, rustic stone and natural woods whether this is with upholstery, furniture or flooring.’

Incorporating natural materials, like the bamboo tree and the wood on the mid-century chairs in Adam and Behati’s space, is a key technique for emulating this style. ‘I would advise opting for a warm coloured wooden floor in tones such as honeyed oak, walnut or reclaimed pine which are particularly well suited to the warm minimalist aesthetic,’ says Amanda. ‘To enhance the serene feeling of an autumn décor, choose a herringbone layout with a two-toned effect for added depth.’

This approach is incredibly versatile. Amanda recommends: ‘For a more immersive and contemporary take on this style, consider embracing the wood-drenching trend using consistent wood tones across floors, walls, cabinetry, and even furniture. This creates a layered, enveloping warmth that elevates the minimalist palette without adding visual clutter.’

Furthermore, chocolate brown decor is a key anchor color for the warm minimalist trend. As evidenced by Adam and Behati’s sofa, it’s an incredibly cocooning, welcoming shade.

What to read next

Magdalena Gierasinska, design expert at Barker and Stonehouse explains: ‘Once dismissed as fusty and old fashioned, the popularity of brown interiors continues to rise thanks to its universal appeal – it works within both traditional and contemporary settings and complements most colourways. Brown is also reminiscent of the outdoors, meaning it has a nurturing influence when used within the home.’

This shade looks best as an accent, rather than an all-over tone. Magdalena advises: ‘My top tip is to use this colour sparingly so that its richness doesn’t feel overbearing. Choose larger pieces of furniture in walnut shades, like sofas and sideboards, but offset these against a plain, light-coloured backdrop.’

She concludes: ‘For those who remain unconvinced, I’d suggest introducing gentle accents in soft brown tones, like a cushion upholstered in caramel or a table lamp with a light wooden base.’

Next year, the design decisions we make in our homes will be all about how we feel, rather than simply what they look like. Warm minimalism is the ultimate manifestation of this sensory design.
