Funny how quickly a hypothetical becomes real when somebody finally has to write the rule.<\/p>\n
Last week, I wrote that the WNBA had backed itself into a corner.<\/p>\n
Turns out somebody at league headquarters finally noticed the walls.<\/p>\n
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has now told teams that the league is discussing transgender-player eligibility<\/a> and expects those conversations to continue.<\/p>\n Good.<\/p>\n It’s about time.<\/p>\n Because the WNBA doesn’t need another statement.<\/p>\n It needs a definition.<\/p>\n The league’s collective bargaining agreement says:<\/p>\n “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.”<\/p>\n Seems pretty straightforward.<\/p>\n Except it doesn’t define what a woman is.<\/p>\n That might have been an amusing legal omission when the question was theoretical.<\/p>\n It isn’t anymore.<\/p>\n THE CRAIG CARTON SHOW\u2013UNFILTERED, UNAPOLOGETIC AND UNMISSABLE. (IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect)<\/p>\n Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White<\/a> say they want to enter the WNBA Draft.<\/p>\n They’re making a point.<\/p>\n French transgender basketball player Julie T\u00e9tart<\/a>, who is biologically male, is already playing professional women’s basketball overseas.<\/p>\n Suddenly the question isn’t something being shouted across cable-news panels.<\/p>\n It’s an eligibility question.<\/p>\n For a professional sports league.<\/p>\n The WNBA has a courage problem and it\u2019s not Sophie Cunningham<\/p>\n And the answer can’t be: We’ll get back to you.<\/p>\n So what\u2019s the standard?<\/p>\n Biological sex?<\/p>\n Gender identity?<\/p>\n Hormone levels?<\/p>\n Medical transition?<\/p>\n Pick one.<\/p>\n Write it down.<\/p>\n Apply it equally.<\/p>\n Because you can’t have a professional women’s league whose rule says only women may play<\/p>\n while refusing to define who qualifies.<\/p>\n That’s not a rule.<\/p>\n That’s a future lawsuit with a basketball.<\/p>\n And while league officials figure this out, we’re getting a pretty good demonstration of why this<\/p>\n subject has become so difficult for the WNBA to address honestly.<\/p>\n Just look at what’s happening in Indiana.<\/p>\n Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington commits a flagrant 2 foul against Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. (Kamil Krzaczynski\/Imagn Images)<\/p>\n DiJonai Carrington came up behind Sophie Cunningham on a fast break and clobbered her in the<\/p>\n head, sending her crashing to the floor and bloodying her mouth.<\/p>\n Carrington was assessed a Flagrant 2 and ejected.<\/p>\n Right call.<\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t even close to a basketball move.<\/p>\n Afterward, Fever coach Stephanie White defended Carrington’s competitiveness and said she<\/p>\n didn’t believe Carrington was trying to hurt Cunningham.<\/p>\n As White spoke, Makayla Timpson looked down.<\/p>\n Caitlin Clark<\/a> buried her head in her hands.<\/p>\n Interesting reaction.<\/p>\n White has since said she hadn’t seen the foul when she made those comments.<\/p>\n There’s a problem.<\/p>\n Video appears to show White looking directly toward the play as it happens.<\/p>\n Locked in.<\/p>\n The WNBA has a courage problem and it\u2019s not Sophie Cunningham<\/p>\n Now, looking isn’t necessarily seeing.<\/p>\n Maybe she missed the contact.<\/p>\n Watch the video.<\/p>\n Decide for yourself.<\/p>\n Then came another press conference.<\/p>\n This time White talked about unity, love, grace and integrity while blasting the outside forces she<\/p>\n says are trying to divide the Fever and “hijack” the WNBA.<\/p>\n Right before she said, “Everybody else can go to hell.”<\/p>\n Hmm.<\/p>\n But she\u2019s right about one thing.<\/p>\n Too many people are trying to turn every WNBA game into something other than basketball.<\/p>\n But here’s the problem.<\/p>\n Most of those forces aren’t coming from outside.<\/p>\n The WNBA invited them in.<\/p>\n For years the league has embraced political and cultural causes far beyond basketball.<\/p>\n Players have been celebrated for speaking out.<\/p>\n Coaches have spoken out.<\/p>\n The league has spoken out.<\/p>\n Broadcasters have spoken out.<\/p>\n Fine.<\/p>\n Not really.<\/p>\n Somewhere in there is a basketball game.<\/p>\n Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White gives instructions to Sophie Cunningham and Caitlin Clark against the Atlanta Dream at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on June 18, 2026, in Indianapolis, Ind. (Getty Images)<\/p>\n But you don’t get to invite politics and cultural activism onto the court when you agree with the<\/p>\n message and then complain that outsiders are hijacking basketball when the questions become<\/p>\n uncomfortable.<\/p>\n That’s not how this works.<\/p>\n Which is why I’ve been impressed with Caitlin Clark<\/a> and Sophie Cunningham.<\/p>\n They’ve backed their coach.<\/p>\n They should.<\/p>\n That’s what professionals do.<\/p>\n The WNBA has a courage problem and it\u2019s not Sophie Cunningham<\/p>\n Cunningham doesn’t need to attack her coach every time someone sticks a microphone in her<\/p>\n face to prove what she believes.<\/p>\n Her position is clear.<\/p>\n She believes boys shouldn’t compete in girls’ sports.<\/p>\n She said it.<\/p>\n She stood by it.<\/p>\n And she\u2019s standing by her coach and teammates.<\/p>\n That\u2019s courage.<\/p>\n And courage isn’t screaming the loudest.<\/p>\n Sometimes it’s standing your ground without burning down the locker room around you.<\/p>\n Clark doesn’t need another national controversy attached to her name either.<\/p>\n These women have something else to do.<\/p>\n Play basketball.<\/p>\n They have teammates depending on them.<\/p>\n Sophie Cunningham #8 of the Indiana Fever smiles before the game against the Washington Mystics on Sept. 20, 2026, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. (NBAE via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Games to win.<\/p>\n A championship to chase.<\/p>\n Maybe the adults running the league could help them out.<\/p>\n CLICK HERE FOR MORE OUTKICK SPORTS COVERAGE<\/a><\/p>\n Start by answering the question.<\/p>\n And while we’re at it, perhaps the people covering the WNBA could ask it.<\/p>\n Not another question about inclusion.<\/p>\n Not another question about the political climate.<\/p>\n Not another invitation for a prepared statement.<\/p>\n Ask the basketball question.<\/p>\n What objective standard determines who is eligible to play in the Women’s National Basketball<\/p>\n Association?<\/p>\n Ask Cathy Engelbert.<\/p>\n Then follow up.<\/p>\n Would Enes Kanter Freedom qualify?<\/p>\n Would Royce White?<\/p>\n Would Julie T\u00e9tart<\/a>?<\/p>\n The WNBA has a courage problem and it\u2019s not Sophie Cunningham<\/p>\n If the answers are different, why?<\/p>\n This is what sports journalists are supposed to do.<\/p>\n Ask questions.<\/p>\n Especially uncomfortable ones.<\/p>\n The tragedy is that the WNBA is sitting on an extraordinary opportunity.<\/p>\n Caitlin Clark brought millions of new eyeballs to women’s basketball.<\/p>\n Audiences grew.<\/p>\n New fans arrived.<\/p>\n The league finally had what every professional sports organization spends decades trying to build: Momentum.<\/p>\n And somehow the conversation keeps becoming about everything except the basketball.<\/p>\n Race.<\/p>\n Politics.<\/p>\n Gender.<\/p>\n Protests.<\/p>\n Officiating controversies.<\/p>\n Culture wars.<\/p>\n Eventually fans get tired.<\/p>\n They didn’t buy a ticket to attend a sociology seminar.<\/p>\n They came to watch basketball.<\/p>\n And that’s why Engelbert’s eligibility discussions matter.<\/p>\n The league has an opportunity to remove at least one enormous source of ambiguity.<\/p>\n Define the women’s category.<\/p>\n Clearly.<\/p>\n Fairly.<\/p>\n Objectively.<\/p>\n Then enforce it.<\/p>\n This debate does not have to be about inclusion.<\/p>\n Transgender people should be treated with dignity and respect.<\/p>\n The WNBA has a courage problem and it\u2019s not Sophie Cunningham<\/p>\n It\u2019s about protection and fair competition.<\/p>\n Women deserve their own athletic category.<\/p>\n And yes, there are people who vehemently disagree with that.<\/p>\n Activists do.<\/p>\n Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever arrives at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., before a game against the Minnesota Lynx on Sept. 22, 2026. (NBAE via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Some members of the media do.<\/p>\n Some WNBA players and coaches do.<\/p>\n Fine.<\/p>\n Then have the courage to have the debate.<\/p>\n But first, the league has to have the courage to define its own rules.<\/p>\n The WNBA keeps saying outside forces are trying to hijack women’s basketball.<\/p>\n Fine.<\/p>\n Then take the issue away from them.<\/p>\n Write the rule.<\/p>\n Define eligibility.<\/p>\n Tell the players.<\/p>\n Tell the coaches.<\/p>\n Tell the broadcasters.<\/p>\n Tell the fans.<\/p>\n Tell Enes Kanter Freedom.<\/p>\n Tell Royce White.<\/p>\n Tell Julie T\u00e9tart.<\/p>\n Tell everybody exactly what the W stands for.<\/p>\n And then do something increasingly novel for the Women’s National Basketball Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n![\"Enes](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/enes-kanter-freedom-wintrust-arena.jpg\")
