Showcase shines light on University of Victoria startups and ventures<\/p>\n

Close to 200 people gathered at UVic on Sept. 24 to get a closer look at some startups and ventures with roots at the university.<\/p>\n
The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science hosted the Startup Showcase at the Engineering Lab Wing (ELW) lobby over the evening, where nearly 20 booths lined the walls and filled rows down the centre of the space.<\/p>\n
Exhibitors ranged from companies led by faculty members, such as Voxcell (Mechanical Engineering professor Karolina Valente), Xlynx (Chemistry professor Jeremy Wulff) and AY Sensors (Electrical Engineering and Chemistry professor Makhsud Saidaminov), to ventures started by alumni and students.<\/p>\n
Sepura, founded by Mechanical Engineering alum Victor Nicolov, began as a capstone project and grew through the entrepreneurial co-op program.<\/p>\n
Interlude, built by fourth-year computer science student Evidence Obojade, already has users and has been accepted into two accelerator programs.<\/p>\n
A student investment group also travelled from Vancouver specifically to attend.<\/p>\n
The evening included two panels \u2014 including an entrepreneurship panel moderated by Anna Kobb brought together Valente, Wulff, AY Sensors CEO John Walmsley, and Philipp Hertel, a serial entrepreneur best known for creating the technology behind Google Wallet and now CEO of Cloud Product, a fully automated vertical farming venture.<\/p>\n
