Christian Horner<\/a> has said Red Bull<\/a> has \u201clost its mojo, its presence, its vibe\u201d since his departure, and, when asked about his future, called Ferrari<\/a> \u201cthe biggest brand in Formula 1<\/a>\u2026 the dream. It\u2019s the sleeping giant of Formula 1.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Times from the Oxfordshire home Horner shares with his wife Geri, the comments on their own aren\u2019t particularly controversial for an outspoken man like Horner, known for creating headlines on a weekly basis while he was still at the helm of Red Bull until he was fired last year. But they do offer an insight into how Horner sees his talents within F1.<\/p>\n

His former Red Bull team, now under the leadership of Laurent Mekies<\/a>, sits a distant fourth in the constructors\u2019 championship, a long way from the dominance of the Max Verstappen<\/a> years, and hasn\u2019t won a race all year.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Ferrari\u2019s underachievement relative to its resources is close to a permanent feature of modern Formula 1 punditry.<\/p>\n

One team, he says, lost something after he was left. The other is waiting for someone to arrive and switch the lights on. He leaves that someone unnamed, but it\u2019s audibly him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould I consider Ferrari? I mean, Ferrari is the biggest brand in Formula 1. It\u2019s the dream. I would just blend into the uniform,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

That Horner suggests he could be Ferrari\u2019s saviour is a tidy piece of self-mythology, and it isn\u2019t an accident.<\/p>\n

In the interview, the same move happens again and again.<\/p>\n

Former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko is \u2018abrasive, erratic, cold, unreliable, ruthless and disloyal.\u2019<\/p>\n

Adrian Newey<\/a>, by Horner\u2019s account, showed his true colours the moment Ferrari came calling in 2014: \u201cAt the first sign of adversity, Adrian wanted to abandon ship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mercedes<\/a> Toto Wolff is vain, corporate and \u201cdisrespectful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ex-Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo<\/a>, in a smaller and stranger dig, is outed as a driver who used to expense bottles of water.<\/p>\n

Even former Toro Rosso<\/a>\/AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost gets filed as \u201cold school, married to the track, and sometimes awkward to deal with\u201d.<\/p>\n

Across an interview that runs to several thousand words, Horner finds fault with practically everyone who has shared a garage with him.<\/p>\n

He appears to find almost none in himself, beyond conceding he might be \u201ca bit of a Marmite character.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horner says his Red Bull payoff, reported to be over \u00a350m, \u201cdemonstrates that you\u2019ve done nothing wrong. They just don\u2019t want you any more. If somebody\u2019s prepared to pay that much money for you not to be there\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true that Red Bull\u2019s competitiveness has dropped over the past year, and it\u2019s also true that Ferrari has failed to use all its resources to emerge as the leading force even under the great opportunity presented by the rules reset.<\/p>\n

None of that proves Horner would have kept Red Bull winning or could help Ferrari return to its glory days.<\/p>\n

But the interview highlights that Horner is, as ever, an extremely good narrator of his own indispensability, and he seems to know it.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he\u2019ll be back on the grid next year, he offers the closest thing to self-awareness in the entire conversation: \u201cI don\u2019t know.
