Sure, last year’s The Life of a Showgirl included some narrative detours, wistful side quests and one still-wild sarcastic takedown — but its core was an easy peace inspired by a forever type of romance, yielding chart-topping smashes about escaping doomed fates and bright skies following onyx nights. Even as this year’s Toy Story 5 soundtrack single “I Knew It, I Knew You” gestured toward a country-pop return and was narratively inspired by an animated character, its lyrical content extended the Showgirl tone of warm, natural contentment.

So when Swift announced The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, a four-track addendum to last year’s album (inspired by — according to Swift — studio sessions with main Showgirl collaborators Max Martin and Shellback to toast a landmark commercial achievement), it was fair to expect more of that rose-colored storytelling. These are the first songs that Swift has released as a married woman — and with a chorus that ends with the line “This is the love of my life, hey hey hey!,” “Cleveland!” certainly acts as such, continuing to punctuate the hard-earned happy ending that’s followed her career-long romantic travails.

“Pink Clouding” and “Babylon” are more reflective, the former about a (possibly famous?) ex she wishes well, and the latter about nostalgic pangs and hometown yearnings. Yet like several Swift songs over the past year, they convey a settled perspective, the thoughts of a person who’s found the answers to longstanding questions.

But then there’s “Patient Zero.” That one, positioned as Swift’s latest single and announced ahead of the rest of the reissue, is wounded, haunted and more than a little pissed-off. It sounds, frankly, beamed in from the Department of Tortured Poets. And it’s the most encouraging thing about this new batch of songs.

To be clear, “Patient Zero” still sounds like The Life of a Showgirl, since it was created by that album’s brain trust. The way in which Swift, Martin and Shellback toy with percussion, tempo and harmonics on the track immediately recalls Showgirl lead single “The Fate of Ophelia,” a radio-friendly pop banger that pushes forward as a slow burn. After the opening strings serve as something of a red herring, “Patient Zero” eases into a luxurious drum setup, and Swift glides across her verses before attacking the beat during the main hook. Like “Ophelia,” the song shimmers, then slams down, inviting head-knocks with some of the sturdiest pop production Scandinavia has to offer.

The sonics are where the Showgirl vibes end, though. “Patient Zero” finds Swift wielding her bitterness like a sword, striking against some bozo ex with an extended metaphor in which he personifies a physical sickness. Swift commiserates with another woman who had the tears kissed off her face, and spits out the word “toxins” when remembering the feelings that once seeped into her misbegotten bloodstream. The resentment nods to other moments in Swift’s pre-Showgirl catalog, from direct lyrical callbacks (the “halo” line doubling back to “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)”) to similarly staged scenes (“I know he charmed your family and friends” recalling the coffee-sipping memory in “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)”). In the hours since the release of “Patient Zero,” internet sleuths have already tried to pinpoint which ex Swift is talking about, or posit the song as an amalgamation of past romances — but the song’s specific target matters less than the fact that Swift is once again notching these arrows in the first place.

Most importantly, “Patient Zero” proves effective as a midway point between the lyrical alienation of The Tortured Poets Department and the pop-banger bedrock of The Life of a Showgirl. The hooks hit, the outro contains some killer internal rhymes (and a smart bit of wordplay with “I see you”), and “free solo social climb” should instantly become a catchphrase. Swift’s voice sounds steadier too, as her tone rises above the backing vocals and more coherently untangles her frustrations. It’s as if Swift can more confidently sing about going through hell because she’s already climbed out of it.

Look: no one ever thought marriage would turn Swift into a one-dimensional songwriter. Obviously, she will have far more narratives to craft over the course of her career than just love stories with girl-gets-guy resolutions. But from the school of fans who consider “Picture to Burn,” “Dear John” and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” some of her finest moments, “Patient Zero” is a signal that Swift is still willing to tap into that side of herself, and still able to strike gold doing so. Even as Swift shines in the light of holy matrimony, there are still plenty of lame dudes out there for Taylor to crush across three-minute pop masterstrokes — and, God-willing, there always will be.

We all knew how “Cleveland!” was going to play out.
