Serre Chevalier, which self-generates 30% of its green electricity needs on site, is deepening its commitment to sustainable mountain operations with a suite of new technologies designed to reduce resource use and improve snow management across its ski area.<\/p>\n

Serre Chevalier<\/a> in the southern French Alps<\/a>, which self-generates 30% of its green electricity needs on site, is deepening its commitment to sustainable mountain operations with a suite of new technologies and circular\u2011economy initiatives designed to reduce resource use and improve snow management across its ski area.<\/p>\n

One of the most significant advances comes from the sky. Working with Elda Technology, the resort now uses drone\u2011based LiDAR surveys to map snow depth with high precision. These flights generate detailed, real\u2011time models of snow distribution, giving piste teams a clear picture of where snow is abundant and where it is thin. With this information, Serre Chevalier<\/a> can optimise grooming routes, reduce unnecessary snowmaking and manage its terrain with far greater accuracy. The resort has also developed an integrated digital platform linking snowmaking, grooming operations and snow\u2011depth monitoring, alongside a proprietary measurement system that will be installed on all groomers from next winter.<\/p>\n

Resource efficiency extends beyond the slopes. Serre Chevalier<\/a> has launched La Ressourcerie by SCV, a long\u2011term framework for reusing materials, equipment and components already available within the company. The initiative builds on earlier reuse projects, including the Pontillas gondola construction and various deconstruction works, and formalises a principle the resort sees as essential: the most sustainable resource is the one not consumed. By giving existing items a second life, Serre Chevalier reduces waste, limits new purchases and embeds circular\u2011economy thinking into its development strategy.<\/p>\n

The resort is also preparing for a major shift in grooming technology. PRINOTH and Compagnie des Alpes have unveiled the LEITWOLF LTE\u2011Motion, the first high\u2011performance electric snow groomer produced at industrial scale. Capable of four to five hours of operation\u2014extendable to seven with fast charging\u2014the machine delivers zero particulate emissions and near\u2011silent running. Production is being localised in Montm\u00e9lian, Savoie, with European\u2011made batteries and a proportion of locally sourced components, supporting regional industry and reducing transport impacts.<\/p>\n

Serre Chevalier<\/a> will welcome the first LEITWOLF LTE\u2011Motion in autumn 2026, becoming a testbed for the technology. Over the next decade, Compagnie des Alpes plans to transition its fleet of 100 groomers to electric models, giving the project the long\u2011term stability needed to reshape snow\u2011grooming practices across the Alps.<\/p>\n
