{"id":912957,"date":"2026-09-28T15:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T15:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/912957\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T15:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T15:28:11","slug":"could-a-publicly-funded-diabetes-prevention-program-cut-health-care-costs-in-quebec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/912957\/","title":{"rendered":"Could a publicly funded diabetes prevention program cut health-care costs in Quebec?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A publicly funded diabetes prevention program in Quebec and Ontario similar to one shown to be successful in England could improve health outcomes and reduce long-term health-care costs, a new study from the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and McGill University and researchers from the United Kingdom has found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no publicly funded diabetes prevention programs in Canada, despite estimates that more than six per cent of Canadian adults age 20 to 79 live with prediabetes, based on data from the Public Health Agency of Canada. That means their blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands every year go on to develop Type 2 diabetes, which requires continuous management and medical care and can cause serious complications, including damage to blood vessels that can lead to heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, kidney failure and vision loss.
