The riding includes Dollard-des-Ormeaux and part of the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough. As voters head to the polls, what\u2019s top of mind and what could shape their choice on election day?<\/p>\n
\u201cReally my priority is health care,\u201d said Nahla Hussein. \u201cIt is terrible here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe economy and the future of our children and our grandchildren,\u201d another person said.<\/p>\n
Two of the candidates running in the riding \u2013 Brigitte Garceau of the Quebec Liberals and Sophie Leroux of the CAQ \u2013 spoke to CityNews.<\/p>\n
Garceau says housing is a key priority. \u201cThe CAQ denied the crisis in housing for many years,\u201d said Garceau, the current MNA who is seeking re-election. \u201cWe have pockets of poverty here in the West Island. We do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Leroux pointed to \u201cinvestment in infrastructure\u201d as a priority.<\/p>\n

Robert-Baldwin is home to roughly 77,000 people, with a population that is predominantly non-francophone. Arabic, Italian, Spanish, Punjabi and Tamil are among the other languages commonly spoken in the riding.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m tired of hearing our cultural community and of course our English community saying we feel like second-class citizens,\u201d Garceau said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal is to protect the French culture but at the same time, they need to be heard so if there\u2019s services, I\u2019ll make sure as an MNA that their voices are heard,\u201d added Leroux.<\/p>\n
Voters in the riding showed up for advance polling on Monday, with some telling CityNews the protection of anglophone and allophone rights remains a key concern.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, I\u2019ve lived in Montreal for over 40 years and I\u2019ve seen the decline of politics in the West Island,\u201d said resident Lucky Singh. \u201cNo one cares about us.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI have no voice. That\u2019s how I\u2019m feeling. And I think most Canadians who live here in the West Island have no voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to be protected by the law for the anglophone because these days they consider them as a minority,\u201d Hussein said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re all Quebecois,\u201d said Zakaib Richard. \u201cMy parents and grandparents are born here. Even though my last name isn\u2019t French Canadian, I\u2019m still Quebecer.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s too much \u2018them against us,\u2019\u201d another voter said. \u201cWe contribute here. All my friends, all my past have moved out, and that\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Robert-Baldwin has long been considered a Liberal stronghold, candidates are still making their pitch to voters.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re about moving on,\u201d Leroux said. \u201cTypically Liberals have been about fighting the referendum, but we\u2019re about autonomy in Quebec and working with the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe most important thing is they need to vote Liberal,\u201d said Garceau. \u201cWe are second in the polls and we certainly are advocating for their rights and interests.\u201d<\/p>\n
CityNews also reached out to the Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois, Conservative Party of Quebec and Qu\u00e9bec solidaire candidates for interviews but they were unavailable.<\/p>\n
