The city authorities of Tartu, Estonia, plan to build the Tuglas Bridge for pedestrians, cyclists and scooter users by 2030, as well as create cycle paths along the extension of Ujula Street. ERR News reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bridge across the Emaj\u00f5gi River<\/p>\n

The bridge is planned to be built as an extension of Tuglas Street across the Emaj\u00f5gi River. According to the initial design, it will be about 100 metres long. Pedestrian and cycling paths will be created on the bridge. From the Supilinn district, the cycling route will run along the Tuglas Street avenue and connect to the recently completed main cycling path network.<\/p>\n

City authorities stated that the structure must not obstruct movement along the riverbanks or disrupt the functioning of green and blue corridors. The bridge construction budget is estimated at \u20ac12 million.<\/p>\n

Extension of Ujula Street<\/p>\n

Ujula Street is planned to be extended by 800 metres towards the Kvissentali district, starting from the sandstone outcrop. A two-way carriageway with pedestrian and cycling paths alongside it is planned there. The budget for constructing new cycle paths on Ujula Street is estimated at \u20ac1 million.<\/p>\n

The city is requesting 70% of the construction funding under an Estonian Ministry of Climate programme aimed at developing sustainable mobility. The implementation of the bridge project will depend on obtaining external funding and its amount. Tartu also intends to use funds that had previously been allocated for cycle paths on Lai and T\u00e4he streets.<\/p>\n

City authorities explained the need for a new crossing over the river by the development of Kvissentali and the planning of the Uus-T\u00e4htvere residential district. After construction is completed in Uus-T\u00e4htvere, between 1,600 and 2,000 people may settle there, while 22 apartment buildings are being constructed in Kvissentali. Kvissentali’s population is expected to grow to 3,000\u20133,500 residents.<\/p>\n
