\n\tIndonesian director Ariani Darmawan is ending a 15-year absence from filmmaking with her debut feature, \u201cJani Be Good<\/a>,\u201d which will world premiere in the Asian Future competition at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tVariety is debuting the film\u2019s first trailer.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe drama is titled \u201cDesember Jani\u201d in Indonesian and produced by Jakarta outfit Palari Films. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe story takes place over four days in December and tracks four women spanning three generations. At its center is 13-year-old Jani, the youngest in the household. She slowly comes to grasp the different parts the women around her play, while working out how to speak for herself.<\/p>\n

\n\tChempa Puteri plays Jani, with Sigi Wimala as Winnie, Hyori Mika as Julia and Tutie Kirana as the grandmother, Oma.<\/p>\n

\n\tDarmawan wanted Cyntha Hariadi to write the screenplay from the outset, having read the writer\u2019s short story collection \u201cManifesto Flora.\u201d \u201cJani Be Good\u201d is Hariadi\u2019s first feature script.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I started thinking about this film, I was imagining the small things that happen inside a home: the conversations, the tension, and the feelings that often go unspoken. We then developed this story together over three years. Becoming a mother also changed the way I see the relationship between children and parents. From there, Jani grew into my way of looking at these four women characters from different generations, all still learning to understand one another,\u201d said Darmawan.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe women on the film\u2019s core creative team also span several generations.<\/p>\n

\n\tDarmawan was a prominent figure in Indonesian short filmmaking through the late 2000s and early 2010s, and her 2008 short \u201cSugiharti Halim\u201d was selected for competition at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I invited Ariani to make a film again three years ago, our conversation didn\u2019t start with genre or what kind of film she wanted to make. I asked her what the most extraordinary experience in her life had been while she wasn\u2019t making films. Her answer was becoming a mother. \u2018Jani Be Good\u2019 began from that simple conversation. For us at Palari Films, this film isn\u2019t just about a filmmaker\u2019s return after 15 years. It\u2019s about giving space for the voices and experiences of women from different generations to meet in one film,\u201d said producer Meiske Taurisia of Palari Films.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe project was presented at the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) in March this year, ahead of its Tokyo selection. After the festival, \u201cJani Be Good\u201d will open in Indonesian cinemas on Dec. 10.<\/p>\n

\n\tPalari Films, founded in 2016, is led by Taurisia and Muhammad Zaidy. The banner\u2019s \u201cVengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash\u201d won the Golden Leopard at the 74th Locarno Film Festival. Its other credits include \u201cAruna and Her Palate,\u201d \u201cPosesif,\u201d \u201cAli & Ratu Ratu Queens,\u201d \u201cDear David,\u201d the Netflix original \u201cBorderless Fog\u201d and this year\u2019s \u201cSleep No More.\u201d<\/p>\n
