Even though he shockingly endured a winless regular season, Larson has now won two of the four Chase races and has done exactly what the rest of the field was hoping he could not<\/a>.<\/p>\n The giant has awoken and has won two of the three most recent races, a run that began when he ended his 51-race winless streak<\/a> at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. He has extended his points lead to 26<\/a> over Denny Hamlin in the process.<\/p>\n Speaking of Hamlin, it seems like a distant memory at this point that he dominated the regular season and entered the Chase as the clear favorite for the title. Although his lead was trimmed from 89 to 25<\/a> with the points reset ahead of the 10-race battle to decide the 2026 champion, he would currently have a 129-point lead<\/a> over Ryan Blaney if the season-long standings were still in play. Larson, meanwhile, would be 222 points back in fifth.<\/p>\n That said, it is no different than the previous format in the sense that everyone plays by the same rules<\/a>, and it is still simply about getting hot at the right time more than anything else.<\/p>\n Each driver has had four races to make an early statement in the Chase, and so far, Larson has been head and shoulders above the rest. Meanwhile, Hamlin finds himself in a familiar position as his pursuit of that elusive title has encountered some adversity.<\/p>\n Denny Hamlin needs to respond in title fight<\/p>\n Hamlin has four wins this season and five when you throw in his All-Star Race win at Dover Motor Speedway, but he has not been to victory lane since his Pocono Raceway win in mid-June. That win gave him three straight wins for the first time in his career.<\/p>\n It’s not like he hasn’t been a factor since that win, but the dominant speed and overall execution have been lacking since. He has top 10 finishes in each of the three most recent races and scored the third-most points of anyone at Kansas with 51, but an 18th-place finish at Darlington due to wall contact and a slow pit stop at Gateway contributed to his slow start to the Chase<\/a>. <\/p>\n While Hamlin’s decline has been completely overblown<\/a> as it relates to his points scored during the postseason so far, he has opened the door for others to step up and answer the call. Through four races, Larson has done exactly that, as the advantage Hamlin and the Toyotas once had appears to be gone<\/a>.<\/p>\n This three-race stretch of races on 1.5-mile ovals was supposed to be an opportunity for Hamlin<\/a> to reestablish his dominance and position atop the standings. After all, he has spent 83% of the laps run on such layouts inside the top five, is the only driver to finish in the top five in all six of those races this season, and has a 2.67 average finish that is tied with Jimmie Johnson (2005) and Bobby Labonte (1999) for the best ever through the first six 1.5-mile races of a season, per NASCAR.com’s Pat DeCola<\/a>.<\/p>\n Instead, Hamlin left the Sunflower State as one of the biggest losers from the race<\/a> after losing more ground to Larson at a track he has won four times at. As someone who has become known for finding every way in the book to lose a title, it is easy to look at this and feel like it is happening all over again<\/a> for Hamlin.<\/p>\n However, it is still too early to immediately jump to any conclusions, especially considering Hamlin has won two races in a row at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the site of Sunday’s middle race of the Chase. Points may have slipped from his grasp during a four-race opening stretch where many expected him to excel, given his track record at each venue, but NASCAR’s winningest non-champion of all-time<\/a> is still just 26 points behind.<\/p>\n
