Surrey Connect’s platform includes nearly $1.5 billion to be put into citywide projects.

Locke—flanked by her eight council candidate hopefuls, including sitting councillors Harry Bains, Gordon Hepner, Pardeep Kooner, and Rob Stutt—made the announcement at Surrey Firefighters Local 1271 (the former historic Port Kells Fire Hall No. 7) after the local firefighters union endorsed Locke and Surrey Connect for the upcoming city election.

The mayor and her team promised infrastructure upgrades and new amenities to be built across the city to the tune of $1.496 billion. The mayor said the money will be allocated on a four-year term, the same as her last term, and that Kooner led the accounting on the project. The mayor said taxes over the period will be kept at or below the rate of inflation.

“It’s fully costed and we know we can do it,” Locke told the Cloverdale Reporter. “We have a record of doing exactly what we said we were going to do and I’m very very confident in our ability to deliver for the residents of Surrey.”

Part of the platform includes $50 million in street upgrades and traffic calming initiatives. The mayor said that there were no concrete plans to tackle the traffic problems that are sure to come to Highway 10 in Cloverdale once the new hospital opens and the surrounding area completes its inevitable transformation into a medical precinct.

She said while Highway 10, as a provincial highway, falls to Province, any bypass around it would be the city’s responsibility.

“Highway 10 is a provincial road, so we don’t have any jurisdiction,” noted Locke, “but our engineering department is working with the Province on it.”

PLATFORM

Here is a breakdown of some of Surrey Connect’s platform promises of nearly $1.5 billion in investment (for a full breakdown, visit surreyconnect.ca).

Rec. and culture facilities: $150 million – South Surrey Ice Arena, $150 million – Surrey Concert Hall, $120 million – City Centre pool, and $120 million – Cloverdale/Clayton pool.

Public safety: $350 million for a public safety campus, $120 million for a Green Timbers Fire Hall, and $12 million for four-person fire vehicles.

Parks and green space: $75 million for three new major parks, $60 million for 12 new park developments, $40 million for 8 new sports fields, and $20 million for generic park upgrades.

Streets and transportation: $50 million for residential street upgrades and traffic calming, $50 million for bike path upgrades, and $50 million for citywide beautification.

Councillor Stutt said the platform announcement speaks to Surrey Connect’s commitment to public safety.
