UVI is the first camera since NASA’s Polar spacecraft ended its mission in 2008 capable of imaging the entire northern auroral oval in ultraviolet light.

            You may like

    Why is it amazing?

Auroras occur when energized particles from the sun collide with gases in Earth’s atmosphere. And rather than just capturing a small snapshot of what’s going on, the ultraviolet imager can continually observe the show for up to 45 hours at a time, revealing how the auroral oval changes as conditions in the solar wind change.

Image captured on Aug. 2, 2026, by the UVI instrument on SMILE shows a full ring of the northern lights around the north pole in ultraviolet light.
