After securing a dominant 7-5, 6-0 victory over Taiwan’s Joanna Garland on Sept. 30, Eala was exiting the court at Higashiyama Park. As she passed a crowd of supporters waiting by the stands, a male fan tossed a white baseball cap in her direction.

The 21-year-old star immediately stopped, set down her racket bag with a serious expression, and addressed the individual directly. Eala instructed the fan not to throw objects at athletes, emphasizing that she would gladly sign items if asked politely.

“Sir, you shouldn’t throw things at the players,” she said in a clip posted by a fan on Instagram. “If you say it nicely, I will sign for you.”

She then lifted the cap up from the floor and signed it before returning it to the fan, who apologized for the incident.

Born into a family of sporting tradition in Quezon, Philippines, Eala joined the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain after winning the prestigious youth tournament Les Petits As in 2018. Her development earned high praise from Rafael Nadal himself, who recently penned a tribute for her inclusion in the TIME100 Next 2026 list, commending her as a grounded and talented athlete.

Her junior career featured girls’ doubles titles at the 2020 Australian Open and 2021 Roland Garros, followed by a historic junior Grand Slam singles title at the 2022 US Open, where she became the first Filipino to win it.

After turning professional, Eala quickly delivered stunning upsets on the global stage. She defeated world number two Iga Swiatek and U.S. champion Coco Gauff at the 2025 Miami Open. In August 2026, she captured her first WTA 500 title in Washington and broke into the world’s top 20, reaching a career-high ranking of 18, a milestone unseen for a Southeast Asian female player.

Her meteoric rise has ignited a passion for tennis in a country where basketball and boxing dominate. Standing at approximately 1.75 m, Eala’s playing style frequently draws comparisons to Asian tennis legend Li Na. Both lack serving power, but rely heavily on mobility, endurance and baseline counter-attacks.

Eala chose to represent the Philippines at the Asian Games this year, risking WTA penalties by skipping the China Open, a tournament with mandatory participation rules.

Her Asian Games campaign ultimately concluded on Thursday with a bronze medal, following a surprise semi-final defeat to China’s Xiyu Wang.

After securing a dominant 7-5, 6-0 victory over Taiwan’s Joanna Garland on Sept. 30, Eala was exiting the…

[442
49,48,316472,82,593
post-918793","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-philippine-tennis-star-alexandra-eala-calls-out-male-fan-for-lack-of-manners-at-asian-games-vnexpress-international","tag-sports","tag-tennis
["GET
