LETTER: Current healthcare system intolerable in Vernon

Published 12:30 pm Wednesday, September 30, 2026

My first of many planned letters regarding the treatment my partner received at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

My partner went into the hospital June 11, 2026 to have a supra pubic catheter inserted. This was a difficult procedure for him.

The next morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. he passed out going into his bedroom rendering him unconscious. He fell with his walker onto his right side, hitting his head which caused significant bleeding. 911 was called who transported him to hospital.

He spent a number of hours in the ER where they did some bladder scans and a head CT but no x-ray to the right hip.

My partner was still experiencing hip pain so went into ER two more times- June 15 for eight hours and June 16 for 6.5 hours and still no x-rays.

Finally, about 10 days later another 911 call and a return to hospital where they finally found he had a fractured hip at the top of the femur.

He then had to have emergency surgery to fix the issue. He spent two weeks in hospital and was then transferred to Gateby Rehab where he remained trying to do therapy to hopefully come home.

This rehab unit is an expense to the patient to the tune of a minimum of $1,500/month.

I have spoken with numerous staff about getting a rate reduction but the process is so cumbersome it is truly abusive. Funds have been withdrawn from our accounts which are now overdrawn so removing him from Gateby may be our only choice which is a risk to us both safety wise.

I am a healthcare worker and even with my experience find this system intolerable and cumbersome to wade through.

I have sent in a complaint to the appropriate complaint department at VJH but of course no reply.

People are being severely abused by this system which in some cases have lead to death.

How much more do people have to put up with?
