The Indiana Fever have the wind at their back when it comes to momentum and potential as a WNBA franchise. However, they can’t seem to get it done on the court.

The Fever are routinely the league’s biggest draw, thanks to Caitlin Clark and the play of Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. However, while they’ve drawn record TV audiences and attracted massive crowds, this attention has also revealed a perception among many that the Fever fanbase is hostile, harassing, and generally makes things uncomfortable for certain players and their families.

This was on display during the Fever’s first-round playoff series against the Las Vegas Aces, which featured a verbal altercation between Aces star A’ja Wilson and an Indiana fan. It was the latest in a series of similar incidents at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, including two Fever fans being escorted from the building after Aces guard Jackie Young flagged their behavior to officials last month. Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas said she has received death threats and had been called racial slurs following an incident with Clark. Fever fans have also received pushback for booing their own coach.

After Las Vegas eliminated Indiana, Fever GM Amber Cox used her end-of-season press conference to support the team’s fanbase, saying the “attacks” against them “have no basis in reality.”

Fever GM Amber Cox:

“The attacks on our fanbase have no basis in reality, and they need to stop.”pic.twitter.com/DvZKdtbWIh

— Underdog WNBA (@UnderdogWNBA) October 3, 2026

“The attacks on our fan base have no basis in reality, and they need to stop, especially with members of the media,” Cox told the reporters present. “Not you guys. I’m talking about media who have never been to a game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Every organization in the league, every organization throughout professional sports, all the way down to youth rec leagues, have to deal with occasional bad behavior from spectators, and anyone who crosses the line is in an arena or online needs to be held accountable.”

Cox continued:

“I want to be really clear about that. There is a line, and people need to be held accountable if they cross it. But here’s the fact. We did not have one fan pointed out by a player who violated the WNBA Code of Conduct this season. Not one fan was removed from a game. We take this really seriously, and that is backed up by our security stats and the lived experiences of countless fans who we host at every game. We have fans from 57 countries and all 50 states attend home games, and we drive global audience not only for the Fever but for the WNBA. And more than 35% of our fans are coming from outside of Indiana every game.

“Our fans love this team. They’re going to cheer, they’re going to boo, and sometimes, they might point. It’s a home-court advantage for a reason, and it’s the same for the Pacers. And all of that is within the code of conduct. Fever games have always been about inclusivity.”

It’s certainly understandable that a team would want to defend its fanbase over accusations of ugly behavior. However, there was a sizable amount of pushback to Cox’s statement from WNBA media members, players, and fans, implying that where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

I’m a former member of the MEDIA who said that I would never step foot in their arena NOR when they play Atlanta.

I STILL stand on that.

This comment from her is extremely dismissive of that racist fan base and to act like ain’t shit happening is white privilege. https://t.co/7GQqX7SPBV

— Dawn (@_dawnmontgomery) October 3, 2026

Well Amber I came from out of state to go to a game. Players inside and outside the organization have repeatedly issued complaints with the Fever Fanbase. While it’s not all Indy fans, it’s certainly a trend.
