A London clinical research company is expanding its operations, including opening a new family health centre, after receiving a significant growth investment from an American firm.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1997, KGK Science is a London clinical research and regulatory consulting company that helps health-product companies substantiate their products through clinical research.<\/p>\n
In the summer, the company secured a growth investment from Chicago-based investment firm Maxim Partners.<\/p>\n
\u201c(Maxim Partners) are very much aligned in our objectives for growing the business and being able to continue to grow the offerings that we provide,\u201d said KGK Science president Najla Guthrie.<\/p>\n
Guthrie said the investment will help the company grow both its clinical trials and regulatory business, helping companies navigate regulatory guidelines.<\/p>\n
She said the company has wanted to break into the Toronto market and potentially open other sites in Canada to grow its clinical operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have what we need from a resource perspective to be able to get there, whereas doing it organically would have taken too long,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The financial details of the investment are not being disclosed, but Guthrie said the investment from Maxim Partners includes an ownership stake.<\/p>\n
Guthrie said demand is increasing for scientifically substantiated health products and regulatory guidance, particularly for companies wanting to enter the U.S. market from Europe and Asia.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose companies need science behind their products, and that demand has grown significantly over the past decade,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Guthrie said the new funding will help support in-house analytical capabilities and future staffing as the company expands its services.<\/p>\n
But the company\u2019s expansion is not limited to clinical research.<\/p>\n
KGK Science is also expanding its space at 275 Dundas St. to open a family health clinic \u2013 a first-of-its-kind venture for the company.<\/p>\n
The clinic, which will be known as the Wellington Family Health Centre, will be owned by KGK but operate separately.<\/p>\n
Guthrie said plans are in place to hire three family physicians for the clinic, with the goal of serving around 4,500 to 5,000 patients in London\u2019s core.<\/p>\n
She said the clinic came together after seeing demand for more family physicians in the city.<\/p>\n
The Ontario Medical Association reported in December 2025 that more than 2.5 million Ontarians do not have access to a family physician.<\/p>\n
Guthrie described the venture as synergistic with what the company does, saying it made sense to provide something for the community while expanding its research operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a need in the community. There\u2019s a lot of people in London that I speak to that don\u2019t have a family physician, there\u2019s definitely a demand,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The new space is planned to be more than 3,000 square feet, and renovations are expected to be completed by the end of October. Guthrie hopes the clinic will open before the end of the year, but as of now, the company has yet to secure physicians.<\/p>\n
Kapil Lakhotia, president and chief executive of the London Economic Development Corp., said KGK\u2019s expansion is another example of London\u2019s diversifying economy, with other life sciences companies such as Medicom<\/a> and Trudell Healthcare also growing in the city.<\/p>\n \u201cKGK is such a great example of a fast-growing local company,\u201d he said. \u201cBy getting this investment from the private equity group, they\u2019ve enabled their growth at both the Western Research Park and opening a new location downtown as well with their new medical clinic.\u201d<\/p>\n Lakhotia said from an economic standpoint, it\u2019s a win on both fronts for the company, especially in addressing a gap in the availability of family medicine practitioners.<\/p>\n
