Apple<\/a> is changing its Mac operating system to make it clearer when artificial intelligence agents seek access to the devices\u2019 data.<\/p>\n

In a Friday (Oct. 2) blog post,<\/a> the company noted that Macs feature a \u201cFull Disk Access\u201d option that lets apps access all the data on a machine, with a user\u2019s consent.<\/p>\n

However, some developers \u201care using Full Disk Access in ways that could put users at risk, exposing everything on their systems \u2014 including files, mail, messages, and even browsing history \u2014 without users\u2019 full knowledge and understanding,\u201d the post said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor communication apps, this can also compromise the privacy of the people users are communicating with.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that in mind, Apple plans to establish new controls to make sure users who want to allow this \u201cextraordinary level of access\u201d can do so only with very explicit user action.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially,\u201d the blog post added. \u201cWe are committed to ensuring users clearly understand these risks before granting such access, so they can make informed decisions about their own data and privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

A report<\/a> on the change by Reuters points out that it comes after Inc magazine technology columnist Jason Aten accused Meta\u2019s Muse AI agent<\/a> of reading private messages on his Mac, and that he had not enabled Full Disk Access.<\/p>\n

According to the report, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone<\/a> has disputed those claims, saying Muse\u2019s access to Apple\u2019s Messages app is strictly opt-in.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to enable both Full Disk Access and the Messages connector for Muse to be able to read your Messages content,\u201d Stone wrote on social media platform X . \u201cIt can\u2019t read your Messages unless you do this. And it can be revoked at any time.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other agentic AI news, PYMNTS wrote last week that the B2B<\/a> space could be the \u201cfirst real market\u201d for agentic payments, as the procurement systems built primarily to control humans become instructions for machines.<\/p>\n
