RUSTON – Louisiana Tech’s women’s soccer (3-7-2, 1-2-1 SBC) team defeated the ULM Warhawks 3-2 (3-9-1, 0-4-0 SBC) Sunday afternoon in Ruston at Robert Mack Caruthers Field.

Under the overcast sky in Ruston, the Bulldogs competed through the first half, with Madison Pensom recording three shots while Mackenzie Lorkowski had three saves. In the 23rd minute, the Warhawks broke through, with a goal from Ines Casanova De Lope. The Warhawks held onto the lead going into the second half, but the Bulldogs needed just six minutes to make magic.

At the 51st minute mark, Pensom would score her first goal. It came after Abby Hanton outplayed her opponent, dribbled into the box, and found Pensom, who netted the ball with her left foot.

Seven minutes later, after a yellow card for both teams, Pensom found the back of the net with a header from a beautiful cross from Reagan Roberts.

Pensom would complete the hat trick just 40 seconds later, following up on a pass to the middle of the box from Abby Hanton, who had just received a through ball from Reagen Roberts. Pensom’s hat trick is the first from a Bulldog since 2019, when Amber Posthauer and Autumn Woodard both had one in a 15-0 win over Alcorn State.

The Warhawks were able to cut into the lead with a goal from Charli Harris, but they could not convert on a 86th minute free kick to tie the game.

Next up, the Bulldogs travel to Troy, Ala. to face the Trojans this Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m.

Notables
Quotables

Head Coach Matt Lodge

“Credit to Madison Pensom. I’m happy to give her the game ball, even if I have to buy one out of my own pocket. She’s now at six goals for the year, which triples our top scorer from last season. We want to continue making those steps forward. We made some adjustments at halftime and scored three goals within eight minutes. That’s what we are capable of. All week I’ve been talking about the I-20 Showdown and how exciting rivalry games are. When you are 35 minutes away from your biggest rival, every game matters. The girls were up for that, and I just love celebrating with them.”

Madison Pensom

“I knew that with it being the first match of the Radiance Technologies I-20 Showdown it would be a big game. I just wanted to win this for our school and this team. I’m so proud and so thankful for my teammates because none of my goals are possible without them. It feels so good to put three in the back of the net and I can’t wait for this team to continue to grow in Sun Belt play!”

SUPPORT LA TECH ATHLETICS BARK LOUDER SOCIAL MEDIA
