Jupiter will appear to &#8220;vanish&#8221; from the predawn sky on Oct.6. Here&#8217;s how you can see it for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Early birds will be treated to quite the show on Oct. 6, as the slender crescent moon, just 20% illuminated, passes in front of Jupiter, appearing to swallow the gas giant whole and spitting it out about an hour later.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ef22f626-be7e-11f1-85c4-ebd4d3c59c5f-2\">The vanishing act will be visible across parts of North America, and for those outside the occultation zone, don&#8217;t fret; you&#8217;ll still see a stunning sight as the gas giant appears remarkably close to the lunar disk after local moonrise (weather permitting).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-ef22f69e-be7e-11f1-a55f-8371066fab49\"\/>What is happening? <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ef22f70c-be7e-11f1-9150-5f072e4ad766\">Known as a lunar occultation, the event happens when the moon passes in front of a more distant object from our perspective on Earth. While occultations of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"stargazing\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> occur fairly regularly somewhere around the world, seeing one from any particular location under a dark sky is much rarer \u2014 occurring on average about once every 13 years, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/jupiter-will-disappear-behind-the-moon-on-oct-6-and-if-youre-in-the-right-place-you-can-watch-it-happen\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/jupiter-will-disappear-behind-the-moon-on-oct-6-and-if-youre-in-the-right-place-you-can-watch-it-happen\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"stargazing\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/jupiter-will-disappear-behind-the-moon-on-oct-6-and-if-youre-in-the-right-place-you-can-watch-it-happen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Space.com skywatching columnist Joe Rao<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-ef22f770-be7e-11f1-a9a2-119462484de7\"\/>Where and when to see it<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ef22f7de-be7e-11f1-946e-6fc52ac96686\">The best views of the occultation will come from the eastern and central eastern U.S. and parts of southern Canada, where Jupiter will disappear behind <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"stargazing\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>&#8216;s bright crescent before emerging from behind its dark, Earth-lit limb roughly an hour later.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Exact timings depend on your location.
