Self-Advocates of Semiahmoo will host Surrey\u2019s mayoral candidates to a \u201cmixer\u201d event Oct. 13.<\/p>\n
The evening \u2013 set for 6-8:30 p.m. \u2013 is not a debate, an emailed advisory notes, but \u201cdesigned to give attendees an opportunity to hear from each candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Candidates Linda Annis, Brenda Locke, Honveer Singh Randhawa, Mike Starchuk, Troy Van-Vliet and Doug McCallum \u2013 as of Oct. 3, Igal Ammons II had not confirmed \u2013 will each be asked a question on housing, affordability, health, public safety and transportation, it continues.<\/p>\n
The candidates\u2019 responses will be followed by SAS speeches \u2013 where advocates will \u201cshare what is important to the disability movement and how local leadership can help build a more inclusive community,\u201d according to a post to the group\u2019s Facebook page \u2013 as well as time to mingle.<\/p>\n
SAS is a self-advocacy group led by individuals with developmental disabilities. It was formed by Semiahmoo House Society members to support and empower their peers with developmental disabilities \u201cthrough leadership, advocacy and community engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n
