The Northern White Rhinoceros has only two females remaining, with the last male having died in 2018. Marine mammals like the Vaquita face threats from illegal fishing, resulting in just ten individuals left. Other species including the Kakapo and Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle are also critically endangered. Looks like it is not just humans who deal with loneliness, but some species of animals are suffering from it too. And, it is because there are simply too few of their kind. From remote forests to isolated islands, these rare species now survive only in tiny, fragmented populations. For these animals, loneliness is more than a poetic idea. Small populations can mean fewer breeding opportunities, inbreeding and a shrinking genetic pool, making recovery even harder. Here are some of the world’s rarest animals whose search for a mate has become a fight for survival.

Northern White Rhinoceros- World’s rarest rhino

Among the many rhino species, this is peculiar as there are only two of them remaining in the world. The two female Northern White Rhinoceros are called Najin and Fatu and live under constant protection at Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Unfortunately, the third of them, Sudan (the last remaining male) died in March, 2018. This effectively rendered the entire subspecies extinct with no way to reproduce. The last official sighting of the animal was seen in 2006 at the Garamba National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo.Fascinating fact- White rhinos are the world’s second largest land animals. While females weigh up to two tonnes, males can weigh as much as three and a half tonnes. Their name is also misleading as they are not actually white, their name comes from a misinterpretation of the Dutch word ‘wijde’ (meaning wide, not white), used to describe the rhino’s mouth.

The Vaquita

The Vaquita is the world’s rarest marine mammal which is sadly on the verge of extinction. The already worrying plight of marine life is brunt more by some species. This is exemplified by the rapid decline of the vaquita in Mexico. There are only 10 individuals of this species remaining in the world. Discovered a little over half a century ago in 1958, we are on the verge of losing the creature entirely. Accidental catchings and drowning in gillnets used by illegal fishing operations and fishing trips meant to catch other species are the primary threats to the vaquita.Fascinating fact- These are shy animals which tend to stay away from boats with active engines. They are often found alone or in pairs and difficult to observe because of their small size, small group size and inconspicuous and slow surface rolls.

The Kakapo

The kakapo is a critically endangered species of parrot found only in New Zealand. The bird’s name also has an interesting story- it comes from the Maori ‘kākāpō’, meaning ‘night parrot’. The bird mates once every four to five years, which is typically slower than most birds.Fascinating facts- It is the world’s only flightless parrot, and the heaviest too. It is a nocturnal bird which has special whisker-like facial feathers for feeling in the dark, a highly developed sense of smell, and a unique musky odour which helps it survive at night.

Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle

This subspecies of turtle is regarded as the largest freshwater turtle on earth. Unfortunately, there are only two known survivors left in the wild. The hopes of survival of the species ended when the last female died in 2023. Today, one of the last male of the species is known to survive in Vietnam and another in captivity in China. These turtles are native to China and Vietnam but have suffered loss of habitat, pollution and overfishing.Fascinating fact- Under ideal conditions, they can live for over 100 years, making them one of nature’s longest living freshwater species. They are massive in size and are also known as Swinhoe’s softshell turtle or the Red River Giant softshell turtle.

Maui Dolphin

Maui dolphins are among the smallest marine mammals in the world. They are one of New Zealand’s only two endemic dolphin species. As per World Wide Fund, there are only an estimated 54 of the Maui dolphins remaining. These are found only off the west coast of the North island. There are several biological factors such as short lifespan (may live until their mid-20s); late maturity (have their first baby at 5-9 years of age); and low reproduction rate (only one baby every 2-4 years). Then there are threats like fishing, toxoplasmosis and other diseases, oil and gas exploration, boat strike, mining, tourism and noise, that have led to the decline in their population.Fascinating fact- They look quite distinct from other dolphins. They have distinctive grey, white and black markings. Their snouts are unique with no obvious beak, unlike other dolphins. They are really small in build with females growing only 1.7m long and males even smaller. The story of these animals should make us all think about the causes of their state. It is not simply about numbers; it is about what happens when a species becomes too scattered, too rare, or too isolated to find its own kind. Their loneliness may be a sign of how much has been lost, but it can also be a reminder that there is still something worth saving.

Several animal species such as the Northern White Rhinoceros and Vaquita are on the brink of extinction.
