The Avoda Golf W2 wedge is a Tour-style wedge with a versatile sole designed for the majority of golfers.\u00a0 High performance, but it demands a quality strike.\u00a0 Great looks and feel.<\/p>\n

Introduction<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, we tested Avoda Golf\u2019s W3 wedges [find it HERE<\/a>], their short game tools designed to keep steep swingers from getting stuck in the mid.\u00a0 Today, we\u2019re looking at the Avoda Golf W2 wedge, the company\u2019s do-it-all short game option.\u00a0 After being very impressed with the W3, the bar for the W2 is high.\u00a0 Read on to find out if these clubs can clear it.<\/p>\n

\"Avoda<\/p>\n

Looks<\/p>\n

The Avoda Golf W2 wedge is almost an exact clone of the W3.\u00a0 For me, there\u2019s not a thing wrong with that.\u00a0 This is a compact wedge with a very clean, traditional look.\u00a0 In fact, from heel to toe it\u2019s the most compact wedge I\u2019ve ever measured.\u00a0 There\u2019s subtle rounding on the leading edge and a generously rounded toe giving the face a soft look.<\/p>\n

In the bag, it\u2019s hard to out-minimalist the Avoda Golf W2 wedge.\u00a0 The only decoration on the back of the club is a moderately sized Avoda logo on the toe.\u00a0 On the sole, you\u2019ll see a single letter \u2013 G, S, or L.\u00a0 \u201cAvoda\u201d is engraved on the hosel with the model designation lightly etched beneath it.\u00a0 That latter detail is easy to miss \u2013 I didn\u2019t realize it was there until I was trying to tell the W2 and W3 apart. Sound & Feel<\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy to confuse the Avoda Golf W2 wedge with the W3 based on looks, and the same is true of sound and feel.\u00a0 Both wedges are forged from carbon steel, and they produce the soft, controlled feel that players expect from a forged wedge.\u00a0 When the club hits the ball, there\u2019s a sense of precision, that the club is going to do exactly what it\u2019s asked to do.\u00a0 There\u2019s also quality feedback through the hands, letting you know exactly where the ball met the face.<\/p>\n

With a premium golf ball, the sound of impact is below average in volume and mid-bass in pitch.\u00a0 It\u2019s best described as a \u201cthud,\u201d which is what I expect from a forged wedge.\u00a0 You don\u2019t get much audio feedback on strike quality unless you hit the ball terribly.<\/p>\n

\nPerformance<\/p>\n

While the looks, sound, and feel of the Avoda Golf W2 wedges match the W3, there is a substantial difference when we turn to the most important category: performance.\u00a0 That difference is the sole.\u00a0 Where the W3 wedge [review HERE<\/a>] is built with high bounce for the player with a steep swing or lots of shaft lean, the W2 wedge has moderate bounce for increased versatility.<\/p>\n

Hitting them side-by-side, the difference in the two soles is obvious.\u00a0 With the W3, I needed to make an effort to take any kind of divot; the club felt like it ejected itself from the turf.\u00a0 The Avoda Golf W2 wedge offers ample insurance against digging, but my normal swing took an average-sized divot.\u00a0 This is the middle ground where most golfers belong.\u00a0 The W2 works well in any turf condition that isn\u2019t asphalt or slush, and it cooperates with most swings.<\/p>\n

In addition to more willingly producing divots, the Avoda Golf W2 wedge places the leading edge a bit lower than the W3.\u00a0 While I found the fairly thin sole of the W3 to be quite versatile for a high bounce wedge, most golfers want to see the leading edge closer to the turf when playing open-faced shots around the green.\u00a0 If you visualize sliding the wedge under the ball rather than \u201cusing the bounce\u201d on pitch shots, you\u2019ll be more comfortable with the W2.<\/p>\n

\"Avoda<\/p>\n

Given this lengthy discussion of the W2 and W3 wedges, you might guess \u2013 correctly \u2013 that there\u2019s a W1.\u00a0 The Avoda Golf W1 wedge is built with very low bounce.\u00a0 We have a full review of the W1 wedge coming soon.\u00a0 For those interested in specs, Avoda Golf does not publish specific bounce numbers.\u00a0 Instead, they state that the W1 has \u201cextremely low effective bounce,\u201d the W2 has \u201cmid effective bounce,\u201d and the W3 has \u201chigh effective bounce.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Avoda<\/p>\n

Turning back to similarities, the Avoda Golf W2 wedge is just like the W3 when it comes to spin and forgiveness.\u00a0 Peak speak is very high, and I was able to hit lower spinning shots without difficulty.\u00a0 All the precision these wedges offer does come at the cost of forgiveness.\u00a0 As a Tour-style wedge, it\u2019s not interested in putting your mishits next to the flag.\u00a0 Small mishits will still find the green, but your results will always reflect the quality of your strike.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Avoda Golf W2 wedge comes in three length systems: Same Length, Combo Length, and Traditional Length.\u00a0 The Same Length wedges match their Same Length sets where every club from 4I to LW is 37\u2033.\u00a0 Combo Length is the middle ground where 8I-LW are the same length: 36\u2033.\u00a0 Traditional Length places the GW, SW, and LW at 35.5\u2033, 35.25\u2033, and 35\u2033, respectively.\u00a0 I have always preferred my wedges a bit longer, so I opted for the Combo Length in my Avoda Golf W2 wedge set. Conclusion<\/p>\n

The sole of the Avoda Golf W2 wedge hits that perfect middle ground, offering both protection from digging and versatility.\u00a0 It also makes it easier to pick the right sole, eschewing all the fancy grind names.\u00a0 On top of that, the spin is excellent, and the compact size makes this club feel like a precision instrument around the greens.
