They say their large language models that have already dramatically changed the fields of coding and software development and mathematics can upend biological research in the same way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okre00013b6rdkmivxcb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But one company\u2019s attempt to do so has already set off a wave of skepticism and controversy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf00023b6rpzvk1g1d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic, the AI and research giant behind Claude, last month said its biology research lab had used AI agents to discover an unusual pattern of DNA in the genetic code of viruses, specifically a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/claude-discovers-novel-enzyme-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">novel enzyme system.<\/a>\u201d The signature is similar to the microbial system harnessed in gene-editing tools such as CRISPR Cas-9, which is used to modify the DNA of living organisms. The technology is commonplace in labs around the world and won the <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2020\/10\/07\/health\/nobel-prize-2020-winner-chemistry-scn-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel Prize in chemistry<\/a> for its inventors in 2020.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf00033b6rqyftr92c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, said on social media the finding offered great scientific potential. \u201cToday we announced the Claude-led discovery of a molecular machine that we suspect could represent a new gene editing mechanism,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DarioAmodei\/status\/2102831170299834652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> on X.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf00043b6rkycvb4et@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic said the discovery had been made \u201cwith only high-level direction from our scientists\u201d and shares of <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/news\/4646229-gene-editing-stocks-fall-anthropic-crispr-like-discovery?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">companies developing gene-editing technology<\/a> fell shortly after the announcement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf00053b6ro9peeemg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, some experts not involved in the work said the finding was early and incremental, and far from a genuine breakthrough.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf00063b6r7q5bpbug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese are very interesting preliminary results, but at this point they don\u2019t demonstrate gene editing or provide a mechanistic picture of exactly what\u2019s happening,\u201d said Aaron Engelhart, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota\u2019s Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf00073b6rb3uo5zsh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Anthropic researchers have not determined what the newfound viral sequences actually do and thus whether they represent a mechanism that has practical applications similar to those used in CRISPR tools, according to a document detailing the research. <a href=\"https:\/\/www-cdn.anthropic.com\/22573675ada52a8ca8a97a1a4b4326b2f208a071.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The research<\/a> also has not been published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2297246422.jpg\" alt=\"Cofounder and CEO of Anthropic Scientists, including Engelhart, said Anthropic\u2019s finding definitely warrants further investigation, and a news release from the company quoted Feng Zhang \u2014 a professor at MIT and the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts and a pioneer of CRISPR genome editing for sickle cell disease treatment among other advances \u2014 who called the work \u201cgenuinely intriguing.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1pv0800183b6r4hwew0de@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But just days after Anthropic\u2019s announcement, Mario Rodr\u00edguez Mestre, who said he used Claude extensively for his recently completed doctoral research at the University of Copenhagen, claimed his unpublished research describes the same viral signatures.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000a3b6rt0vaf9ir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is essentially the same finding. This is not simply a case of two groups studying related protein families or similar biological systems,\u201d Mestre told CNN via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000c3b6rq9zjwi9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mestre\u2019s claims echo those made by mathematicians after OpenAI, which built ChatGPT, announced it had solved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/09\/business\/openai-millennium-problems-navier-stokes-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a longstanding and high-profile math problem<\/a>. They also raise questions about how Claude\u2019s find unfolded.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000d3b6rq5txllld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The biologists working at the Anthropic lab said they gave Claude a prompt to search a massive database of DNA sequences for \u201cinteresting new examples\u201d of reverse transcriptase, or RT, an enzyme that copies RNA into DNA and thus plays a role in the spread of genetic information in an organism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000e3b6rd7q2pfph@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company said 950 AI agents, which can independently plan and execute tasks, spent 21 hours searching the data, picking out 3,500 RTs. It narrowed the pool down to the 20 most compelling. For an experienced scientist, this type of analysis can take weeks to months, according to a statement from Anthropic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000f3b6rojwa2l6k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then, \u201cone of the agents spotted something remarkable: a repeating pattern of DNA sequences that occurs next to the gene for an odd-looking RT,\u201d the company noted in the statement. \u201cAfter a thorough analysis it was convinced that it had found a new biological system, and filed a report for human review.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/0f6064436a364b73ce0d2a80848ac56be7ae9ddd-1360x1160.gif\" alt=\"The raw DNA Claude reviewed when it detected the repeat pattern.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1160\" width=\"1360\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000g3b6rdpa5do3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic said scientists at its biology lab then analyzed and tested the finding, which they described as a \u201cpreviously uncharacterized\u201d biological system in bacteriophages, a type of virus that attacks bacteria, with a similar structure to CRISPR, which is naturally found in bacteria.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000h3b6rkupo72b7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mestre, however, said he had shared unpublished research on his private Claude account, including drafts of his dissertation, analyses and material describing these systems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrf000i3b6ry0v4dfua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI am not claiming that Anthropic deliberately took our work. I cannot demonstrate that,\u201d he told CNN via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000j3b6rlduph159@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEither information related to our work somehow reached the model and it was trained on it. The second possibility, which I currently think is more plausible, is that there was considerably more prior scientific knowledge and human direction behind the search than the phrase \u2018autonomous discovery\u2019 suggests,\u201d Mestre added, referring to language used in the release.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000k3b6r40oxg49k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic did not respond to an emailed request to comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000l3b6rtz79xoxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s not unusual in the scientific process for different research groups to converge on the same result, but Mestre\u2019s allegation is serious, and many scientists may think twice in the future about inputting their unpublished results into these tools, said Ilya Finkelstein, a professor in molecular biosciences at University of Texas at Austin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000n3b6rmg6llc4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, Anthropic\u2019s announcement does suggest that AI is beginning to work with more autonomy in science, said Gustavo Sudre, a professor of genomic neuroimaging and artificial intelligence at King\u2019s College London.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000o3b6rv18xxwqa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt received a broad direction and then had to use its own judgement about what was interesting in the data. That is a real shift from the usual \u2018analyze this dataset for me,\u2019\u201d he said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000p3b6ry3xcoskr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI excels at the \u201cneedle in a haystack search,\u201d rather than the \u201cimaginative breakthrough,\u201d Finkelstein added. AI tools would help explore domains where students would get too tired or bored with finding an interesting pattern worth further investigation, he noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000q3b6rzr6vdv2c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey can pursue a very large number of unproductive paths rapidly,\u201d Finkelstein told CNN. \u201cThey are really good at grunt work when orchestrated by experts in the field.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000r3b6rwvzfqmgo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Finkelstein also noted that the Anthropic paper\u2019s lead author is Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/peter-hyungjun-yoon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Peter Yoon<\/a>, who used to work in the lab of Jennifer Doudna, who is one of CRISPR Cas-9\u2019s architects and shares the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/07\/health\/nobel-prize-2020-winner-chemistry-scn-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2020 Nobel Prize<\/a> with Emmanuelle Charpentier. So, Anthropic\u2019s AI agents were guided by people at the top of their fields, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000s3b6rzrb8qckv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFour of six authors are senior molecular biologists and domain experts. Give that group a heap of compute and frontier models (without safeguards, I\u2019m guessing), and I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll be seeing more interesting bioinformatic discoveries,\u201d Finkelstein wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/finkelsteinlab.org\/blog\/harvesting-and-replenishment-in-biomedicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in a blog post<\/a> on his lab\u2019s website.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000t3b6rsigk5nk4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, other researchers say talk of autonomous AI-driven discovery is hype that gets ahead of the actual science, and models aren\u2019t yet able to generate meaningful results on their own \u2014 despite the claims to the contrary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000u3b6r2nlhte56@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Letting a model comb through data at a scale no human can match does move a field forward, but it doesn\u2019t necessarily herald a big advance, Sudre said. \u201cFrom experience I can tell you that the gap between \u2018interesting pattern\u2019 and \u2018useful knowledge\u2019 is where most of the work lives,\u201d he noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/1c78d0a671cbf1715b3f09a790e6d1a90466de1a-2048x1257.jpg\" alt=\"The interface of Claude Science, Anthropic's recently debuted AI tool for research.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1228\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000v3b6r7funbo68@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic launched Claude Science, its tool designed for research, earlier this year. Its rivals have all recently unveiled similar tools. OpenAI has GPT-Rosalind, Microsoft has Quine and Google DeepMind has Co-Scientist. They operate like large language models but also harness specific scientific datasets such as DNA sequences.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000w3b6rbnuhbwwh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, models are only as reliable as the data they are trained on. For example, the strength of Google DeepMind\u2019s AlphaFold, which <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2024\/10\/09\/science\/nobel-prize-chemistry-proteins-baker-hassabis-jumper-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">won the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry<\/a> for decoding protein structures, comes from training the AI system on a narrow, specialized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03819-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data source collected over decades<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000x3b6rkep7ty8l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI developers are under intense public scrutiny amid growing concern over rogue AI agents and whether AI companies can adequately police them. Biological discoveries can offer company executives an opportunity to craft a more positive narrative that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/17\/tech\/how-will-ai-exterminate-humanity-cec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">counterbalances some of the doomsaying<\/a> surrounding their products.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000y3b6rw1do8i4v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But moving toward significant and tangible findings in the field likely requires integrating the AI models into hands-on lab work through robotics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg000z3b6r3hfe68yd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBiology is not maths and at some point the intelligence has to be expressed in the physical world through a robot that can do the fiddly one-off experimental tasks that a good student would normally do almost instinctively,\u201d said Yuval Elani, an associate professor in biochemical technologies at Imperial College London. \u201cFrom what I have seen of robotics and automation we aren\u2019t really close. So it will be a while until we can really justify the hype around AI in biology.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg00103b6rg8fn6ubj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic says it understands there is a limit to what artificial intelligence can do alone and is investing in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/model-hardware-standard-research-preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">model hardware<\/a>\u201d that will allow AI agents to safely operate physical devices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmux1okrg00113b6r3gp4erjj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sudre at King\u2019s College, whose work integrates genomic, clinical, neural and cognitive data to predict how mental health symptoms will develop in children, is emphatic that the role of humans in science isn\u2019t shrinking.
