Increasingly, baseball-themed apparel is purchased worldwide, according to the data aggregator Statista, based in Germany. (\u00a9 Itsuo Inouye\/AP)<\/p>\n<p>Demand stems partly from the growth in international fans \u2014 Japanese baseball enthusiasts, for instance, take great pride in the Los Angeles Dodgers\u2019 Shohei Ohtani and the San Diego Padres\u2019 Yu Darvish. But demand is also driven by fashion-conscious youth, who might know little about the game but like the look.<\/p>\n<p>A feeling of connection<\/p>\n<p>Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. says baseball apparel forges a connection among players and fans. Griffey\u2019s is not a passing interest. Though retired from the league, he partners with Baseballism and Nike to help design baseball-themed clothing and shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball\u2019s influence on fashion<\/p>\n<p>Baseball historian Todd Radom, author of Winning Ugly: A Visual History of the Most Bizarre Baseball Uniforms Ever Worn, notes that what the players wear on the field has shifted over the decades, moving from conservative to brighter, bolder uniforms in the 1970s, and back to classic color schemes in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-148187 size-full\" title=\"Graphic showing timeline of baseball style and images of players, fans, musicians and models wearing baseball items (Graphic: State Dept. It also engages in creative collaborations with casual clothing lines like Mitchell &amp; Ness and Goat USA and high-fashion brands like Italy\u2019s Gucci and Moschino, and U.S.-based Ralph Lauren.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"baseball | ShareAmerica\" href=\"https:\/\/share.america.gov\/tag\/baseball\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Baseball-themed<\/a> runway collections combine luxury materials (leather, cashmere or silk) and expressive overlays (crystals or floral and cartoon-character appliqu\u00e9s).<\/p>\n<p>Moschino, for example, routinely blends oversized baseball jersey dresses with cartoon figures. Superstars\u2019 jerseys are always popular, she says, and Griffey\u2019s consistently ranks among the company\u2019s top-10 sellers.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s thrilled. \u201cI always like seeing my stuff out there,\u201d he says.
