A team of researchers from Germany conducted the study and published their findings in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research.<\/p>\n
The investigators explained that it was important to evaluate psychotherapeutic treatment approaches for patients with IBS because the condition is \u201ccharacterized by recurring gastrointestinal symptoms and substantial psychosocial burden.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the burden of the disorder and the various therapeutic options available to patients, a superior treatment approach has not been identified, the study authors wrote.<\/p>\n
A total of 79 patients participated in the study and completed symptom diaries once daily for 7 weeks to determine randomization. The investigators explained that they used the individual symptom patterns identified in participants\u2019 diaries to assign patients, in a personalized or reverse-personalized manner, to eye movement and desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) or gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH) groups.<\/p>\n
In addition, patients selected for the control group received \u201coptimized treatment as usual (TAU).\u201d Investigators highlighted primary and secondary outcomes of the study, which were study protocol feasibility and \u201cchanges in gastrointestinal and psychosocial measures after the interventions (T2) and at a three-month follow-up (T3),\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n
A total of 58 patients (73.4%) completed their assigned therapy and attended at least five sessions out of seven total sessions. Using the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS), the investigators observed high baseline symptom burden among participants (IBS-SSS: 314.19, STD \u00b1 81.21).<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the findings demonstrated a lack of \u201csignificant differences in secondary outcomes\u201d across both \u201cpersonalized and reverse-personalized therapy at T2 and T3.\u201d Investigators highlighted that pre-post change scores among both intervention groups at T2 showed improved somatic symptom burden (SSS-8: P=0.003 personalized therapy; P=0.05 reverse-personalized therapy).<\/p>\n
In reflecting on the results, the investigators underscored that PIONEER-IBS investigated \u201cnovel concepts of personalizing therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n
