By the time he left, however, an unexpected conversation had given him something he hadn’t seriously considered in years: the opportunity to return to NASCAR for an entire season.

And the offer caught him completely off guard.

Kahne, an 18-time NASCAR Cup Series winner, will drive Spire Motorsports’ No. 77 Chevrolet full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2027. The announcement marks a significant new chapter for the 46-year-old, who stepped away from full-time Cup competition in 2018.

During a recent appearance on Kevin Harvick’s “SPEED” podcast, Kahne explained how a casual conversation with Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson turned into an opportunity he ultimately couldn’t refuse.

Kasey Kahne Reveals the Conversation That Changed His NASCAR Plans

The Knoxville Nationals might seem like an unlikely place for a NASCAR comeback to take shape. For Kahne, whose racing interests have long extended beyond stock cars, it turned out to be exactly where his next opportunity began.

Dickerson approached him at the sprint car event and brought up the possibility of driving Spire’s No. 77 truck in 2027. Kahne initially assumed the discussion concerned something considerably less ambitious.

“I was blown out of the water as well,” Kahne told Harvick. “Jeff Dickerson came up to me, and we were talking at Knoxville Nationals this year, the sprint car race out there.”

Then Dickerson made his intentions clear.

“He was like, ‘Yeah, we, we want you to come and run full-time.’ And I was like, ‘full-time?’”

For a driver who hadn’t competed in a full NASCAR season in eight years, it was hardly a routine offer.

Kahne had already enjoyed a lengthy Cup career, collecting 18 victories before stepping away from full-time competition. He had continued racing in other disciplines, but returning to the demands of a national NASCAR schedule represented a much bigger commitment.

The more he considered it, though, the more appealing it became.

“It was a big surprise to me, but I got thinking about it and to get that type of an opportunity. I’ve been out I think, eight or nine years, somewhere in there, and to get that type of an opportunity to run a truck and be with a team with a lot of success, I was like, man, ‘I can’t pass this up.’”

Kahne also discussed the decision with his partner, Amy, before committing.

“So yeah, I got excited pretty quick. Talked to Amy a lot about it, and yeah, this makes a lot of sense.”

Kahne’s Rockingham Return Helped Answer an Important Question

Although Kahne hasn’t raced full-time in NASCAR since 2018, his return to Rockingham Speedway in 2025 offered an encouraging indication of what he might still accomplish.

Competing in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Kahne qualified fourth and finished 14th. The result wasn’t spectacular, but the experience gave him something valuable: a chance to assess how comfortable he felt in a modern NASCAR race car.

His biggest adjustment wasn’t necessarily the driving.

“I would say to me, the biggest thing that I felt like I had to work on throughout the race and throughout the weekend was everything on pit road, restarts, racing side-by-side, and just understanding where that car is and kind of where your car is, you know, just how it changes the feel of your car in a way and the balance off of air.”

Kahne explained that the fundamentals behind the wheel felt surprisingly familiar, even after such a lengthy absence.

“But the, the actual driving part was so like, I didn’t feel like I was out of it hardly at all. And I had been for a while at that point.”

That distinction matters as he prepares for 2027. Kahne isn’t returning under the assumption that everything will be exactly as he remembers. He understands that the racing procedures, competition and weekly routines will require attention.

But the confidence in his ability to drive competitively remains.

Kasey Kahne Isn’t Ruling Out Racing Beyond 2027

For now, Kahne’s agreement with Spire covers one season.

He isn’t making promises about a lengthy second NASCAR career, although he isn’t dismissing the possibility of continuing beyond next year, either.

“I mean, right now, I think just a one-year deal is kind of how it’s in my mind. And yeah, just really see how it goes.”

It’s a measured approach for a driver who has already accomplished plenty in NASCAR and doesn’t need to return simply to add to his résumé.

There’s also another part of the comeback that Kahne is particularly looking forward to: reconnecting with the fans.

His Rockingham appearance reminded him how much enthusiasm still surrounds his racing career, something he hopes to experience throughout the 2027 Truck Series season.

“When I ran that race last year at Rockingham, I could feel and see it, whether it was on social media or whether it was at the racetrack that weekend. You get to see some of the excitement of the fans that I had years ago and that we all had in the 2000s.”

The challenge now is turning that excitement into competitive results.

Kahne knows the attention surrounding his return will be substantial, but he’s approaching the opportunity with the same expectations that defined his first NASCAR career: He wants to run well, compete for victories and make the most of the equipment he’s been given.

What began as an unexpected conversation at a sprint car race has become one of NASCAR’s most intriguing developments for 2027.

And for Kahne, the chance to find out what he can still accomplish was simply too good to turn down.

Kasey Kahne wasn’t looking for a full-time NASCAR ride when he arrived at the Knoxville Nationals earlier this…

[446
49,48,42481,634,82
post-926271","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nascar","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-kasey-kahne","tag-nascar","tag-sports
["GET
