{"id":926698,"date":"2026-10-09T15:58:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T15:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/926698\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T15:58:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T15:58:10","slug":"a-link-between-junk-food-and-depression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/926698\/","title":{"rendered":"A link between junk food and depression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A University of California team in San Francisco, United States, has called for large-scale tests to confirm a connection between a\u00a0junk food habit and vulnerability to\u00a0depression after 20 patients reported improved symptoms, such as reduced anxiety, after switching to a healthier diet.<\/p>\n<p>The participants in the preliminary investigation \u201creduced ultra-processed food intake by more than 85%\u201d, and\u00a0in turn reported \u201cmoderate to large improvements across three measures of depression\u201d,\u00a0the university stated.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/lifestyle\/health\/2022\/09\/13\/ultra-processed-foods-are-bad-for-your-mind-heart-and-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ultra-processed foods are bad for your mind, heart and life<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tests \u201csuccessfully established the viability of carrying out this research in a larger-scale trial\u201d, said study senior author and Ray and Dagmar Dolby Distinguished Professor in Psychiatry and Neurology Dr Andrew Krystal.<\/p>\n<p>Published in JAMA Psychiatry, an American Medical Association journal, the paper was described by the university as possibly \u201cthe first to compare symptoms in people with depression before and after they switched from their regular ultra-processed diet to healthier food\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In their paper, the team explained that \u201cfurther studies are needed\u201d to assess how factors such as a \u201cchange in macronutrient content\u201d, such as sugar\u00a0and fat, affects depression patients, as well as how calorie intake differences play out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/lifestyle\/health\/2025\/01\/28\/the-link-between-the-food-we-eat-and-our-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The link between the food we eat and our mental health<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers added that the impact of \u201ccontaminants from processing\u201d, and the mix of additives, preservatives, stabilisers, artificial colours and flavourings, should be assessed in future examinations.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being convenient, quick to cook and often less expensive than healthier options, ultra-processed snacks can trigger dopamine, sometimes called the\u00a0pleasure hormone, said study lead author and assistant professor of psychiatry Dr D.
