Emerging Infectious Diseases and Global Health Security

As of October 7, 2026, the DRC has recorded a cumulative total of 8,787 confirmed cases and 4,242 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 48.3%. Ituri remains the epicenter of the epidemic, accounting for 74.5% of cumulative confirmed cases and 49.2% of the new confirmed cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Sixty-four out of 167 health zones (38.3%), distributed across seven provinces, have been affected since the start of the epidemic.

Ebola and children

Nearly 2,000 children have lost one or both parents, or have been separated from their parents or guardians since the start of the 17th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This figure was released by UNICEF in a statement published on October 6, 2026. The recorded cases are mainly in Ituri and North Kivu.

“Children are also disproportionately affected by the epidemic. As of September 29, at least 2,076 children had tested positive for Ebola and at least 1,162 had died, according to UNICEF’s analysis of data from the Ministry of Health which includes the age of patients,” the statement said.

Children account for more than one in four confirmed cases, but nearly one in three deaths. Among children under five, the situation is even more critical: seven out of ten infected children have died, compared to six out of ten just a few weeks earlier. UNICEF reports that many children die before even receiving medical care.

Ebola update Fifty-nine new confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)—including 26 community deaths—were reported across three provinces:…

[10
49,48,84
post-927050","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-health
["GET
