Black Midi<\/a>, had been accused of sexually assaulting a woman while on tour. Flyers had been handed out outside the venue spelling out the allegation against him. \u201cLet him know what Vancouver thinks of rapists,\u201d they read.<\/p>\nWhat followed was an astonishing speech by Greep, who dealt with the accusations head on. While some of his fans inside the Pearl heard him out, others made for the exit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a very serious matter that I must talk about,\u201d he said. \u201cSomeone out front is handing out flyers saying I\u2019m this, saying I\u2019m that \u2026 and it needs to be talked about.\u201d He added: \u201cI would never rape a woman. I\u2019m not a rapist. It\u2019s not how that went down.\u201d<\/p>\n
The flyers, which fans posted images of online, were detailed in their allegations. \u201cYou know what you did this morning Oct 8th,\u201d it read, and: \u201cHe thinks he can do whatever he wants because he\u2019s gone tomorrow.\u201d Greep\u2019s response was even more so.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cEssentially what happened last night \u2026 me and some of the band, we went out to some bars. We went around, we met people. And it ended up in a situation where really late at a house party I got the wrong end of the stick with someone that was there.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI made a move and it didn\u2019t come off,\u201d he said, \u201cand I really quickly of course apologised. It was a complete misunderstanding on my part. It felt extremely bad and I feel extremely sorry and extremely upset about the whole situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cBasically I just wanted to be transparent with you about what happened. Very very sorry to someone \u2026 I made someone feel uncomfortable without meaning to. It\u2019s not a good thing \u2026 and it\u2019s not good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greep went on to explain the absence of his usual backing band, saying: \u201cI didn\u2019t want to force them to still play a show in the light of that happening. We were unsure what would, kind of, be the response in all of this. I can only tell you that it\u2019s OK if people want a refund, if they want to leave it\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 27-year-old added that proceeds from the evening\u2019s event would be donated to a violence against women charity in British Columbia. Afterwards, Greep said that he would continue the show alone if the crowd wished. \u201cIt\u2019s just gonna be me,\u201d he said, \u201cjust like the old days.\u201d Reports from fans online show that the musician continued with a solo set. Some members of the crowd could be heard cheering.<\/p>\n
Alex Lacidos witnessed the \u201cjarring\u201d speech. \u201cThe crowd was really confused, we had been waiting for more than two hours,\u201d he said. \u201cAfter his talk he started his performance by himself, the vibes were awful and it looked like he was about to burst into tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany people left before it was over.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reddit user wreeum \u2013 who recorded the concert \u2013 said he felt \u201cconflicted\u201d about the incident and that it was \u201ca huge allegation to make on the same day it happened, especially to print out several dozen flyers\u201d. He added: \u201cSexual assault shouldn\u2019t be taken lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another fan who was present at the gig wrote on X: \u201cWent to the Geordie Greep concert tonight, left after his little speech. I really don\u2019t know what to think.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greep is on tour in North America with his debut solo album, The New Sound.<\/p>\n
His previous band Black Midi released their album Schlagenheim<\/a> in 2019, and it was shortlisted for the Mercury prize. After speculation around the band\u2019s breakup, the group was disbanded in 2024 following a live-streamed announcement by Greep on Instagram.<\/p>\nGreep and his current backing band were still down to play a show in Boise, Idaho on Friday as they continue a series of gigs in the US before a European leg in November.<\/p>\n
