said Sadowski.

Without moonlight brightening the sky, astronomers gain a better opportunity to search for galaxies, nebulae and star clusters that can otherwise be difficult to spot.

“Around October 10th is one of the best periods of the month to get outside of the city and go looking for things like galaxies, nebulae and star clusters,” she said.

Residents willing to venture away from city lights may also notice significantly more stars visible overhead during the new moon period.

Hunter’s Moon follows later in the month

The dark skies associated with the new moon won’t last forever.

Later in October, the Moon will reach its full phase and become the Hunter’s Moon, one of the traditional full moon names associated with the autumn season.

While bright moonlight makes it more difficult to observe faint deep-sky objects, a full moon creates an impressive sight of its own.

The Moon’s light can illuminate landscapes, cast shadows and create striking photography opportunities.

The Hunter’s Moon earned its name because it traditionally arrived at a time of year when hunters prepared for winter following the autumn harvest.

Different moon phases, different opportunities

Sadowski said different moon phases appeal to different types of observers.

Those interested in galaxies, nebulae and other faint celestial objects often prefer the darker skies that come with a new moon.

Meanwhile, casual skywatchers and photographers may enjoy the bright and easily recognizable appearance of a full moon.

Whether residents prefer the darkness of the new moon or the brilliance of the Hunter’s Moon, October offers opportunities to appreciate both sides of Saskatchewan’s night sky.

October’s night sky will feature two notable lunar events, giving both seasoned astronomers and casual observers a reason…

[7
49,48,66
post-928090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-science","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-science
["GET
