\n\tBritney Spears<\/a> is effectively retired from pop music, but next month, her fans will get to hear a previously unreleased track that is likely to spark serious early 2000s nostalgia. On Friday (Oct. 9), the 44-year-old singer dropped \u201cShe\u2019ll Never Be Me,\u201d a classic-era Britney pop banger that was originally recorded for her self-titled third LP, 2001\u2019s Britney.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpears co-wrote the song with her then-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake<\/a>, as well as Bradley Daymond (*NSYNC) and Alex Greggs (*NSYNC, Paris Hilton) and it was co-produced by Riprock \u2018n\u2019 Alex G.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know I\u2019m one of a kind\/ Boy, what\u2019s this I see\/ Your girl, she looks just like me\/ Blond hair and dressed to a T\/ You tell me how can this be\/ Does she know I was the one\/ Who used to turn you on,\u201d Spears sings in her signature nasally, girlish voice over a burping keyboards and a robotic, drum machine beat.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe song is among a bevy of previously unreleased tracks slated to appear on the upcoming 25th anniversary edition of Britney, due out on Nov. 6. In addition to such beloved hits as \u201cI\u2019m a Slave 4 U,\u201d \u201cOverprotected,\u201d \u201cLonely\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,\u201d the 25-song expanded version will feature the \u201cI\u2019m a Slave 4 U\u201d B-side \u201cIntimidated,\u201d as well as \u201cRight Now (Taste the Victory),\u201d from the singer\u2019s 2002 Pepsi commercial, and the previously unreleased songs \u201cAm I a Sinner,\u201d \u201cWhen I Say So\u201d and \u201cMy Big Secret,\u201d produced by the Neptunes, according to the singer\u2019s posted tracklist<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know I\u2019m one of a kind\/ There\u2019ll never be another me\/ Can\u2019t get me out of your mind\/ You\u2019re lost in your own fantasy\/ And when you look in my eyes\/ Is it hard for you to realize\/ She\u2019ll never be me,\u201d Spears sings on the kiss-off chorus of the song in which she slams an ex for replacing her with an exact replica.<\/p>\n

\n\tBritney signaled a more grown-up direction for the then-19-year-old singer, following on the heels of her breakout LPs \u2026Baby One More Time and Oops!\u2026 I Did It Again. The album also featured another Timberlake collaboration, the JT co-written\/co-produced \u201cWhat It\u2019s Like to Be Me,\u201d which closed out the original set. Spears and Timberlake began dating in 1999 and broke up in March 2002. After their split, Timberlake released the revenge tune \u201cCry Me a River,\u201d whose video featured a Spears look-alike to go with lyrics about a man who refuses to take back his ex after discovering that she\u2019s been unfaithful.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpears has not yet posted about the song on her socials, though her Facebook account<\/a> teased on Sept. 30 that \u201cmore surprises are coming every week\u201d until the refreshed album\u2019s November release. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe JT co-write is the first \u201cnew\u201d music from Spears since she teamed up with will.i.am on 2023\u2019s \u201cMind Your Business\u201d and Elton John on \u201cHold Me Closer\u201d in 2022. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn January of this year, Spears \u2014\u00a0who hasn\u2019t released an album of new material since 2016\u2019s Glory \u2014\u00a0vowed that she would \u201cnever perform in the U.S. again<\/a>,\u201d more than seven years after wrapping her global Piece of Me tour. Her most recent live performance was on Oct. 21, 2018 in Austin, Texas and the singer adamantly stated in 2024 that she will \u201cnever return to the music industry<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
