A re-elected BC NDP government will add a new urgent and primary care centre in North Delta, the party announced on Monday (Oct. 12).<\/p>\n
The promise was made in a press release issued early that afternoon, following a campaign event at North Delta\u2019s Sunbury Hall where NDP leader David Eby announced and signed the party\u2019s Public Health Care Guarantee (a \u201cpledge to protect B.C. from American-style, for-profit, pay-your-way health care,\u201d according to a party release from earlier that morning) and outlined new rules to strengthen public health care in B.C.<\/p>\n
The commitment to opening a new UPCC in North Delta did not come with any details or a proposed timeline for the much-needed facility, which the City of Delta, City of Surrey, Tsawwassen First Nation<\/a> and other community partners have been advocating for over the past couple of years<\/a>.<\/p>\n Todd Schierling, BC NDP\u2019s candidate in Delta North, said he\u2019s proud to support a plan that brings care closer to home, in a press release noting UPCCs make it easier for people to get care for minor illnesses and injuries, reducing pressure on hospital emergency departments.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a firefighter, I know how much it matters for people to get help when they need it. A new urgent and primary care centre would give North Delta residents another place to turn for urgent care and help emergency departments focus on the most serious cases,\u201d Schierling said.<\/p>\n The party\u2019s release notes the proposed new UPCC would build on the 48 already open across the province, which since the first opened in 2018 have collectively received more than five million visits.<\/p>\n
